Proud of the result obtained by Brian Breiter and Shayan Vafaee for our client, a senior citizen who was simply visiting a friend at an adult care facility.

While she was seated in the waiting area waiting to be picked up, a van backed into her and caused serious injuries.

Of course, the defense and insurance company tried to minimize the impact and downplay what this incident did to her life.

THE MASTERS ARE BACK — LIVE IN THE COURTROOM. ⚖️

For the first time since 2019, LA-ABOTA’s Masters in Trial returns live to the courtroom.

This year, LA-ABOTA will recreate Ferrera v. Terminix — a real pesticide-exposure case that resulted in an $8 million jury verdict.

And this isn’t a hypothetical.

Hon. Norman P. Tarle (Ret.), the actual judge who presided over the trial, will return to the bench to preside again.

Some of Los Angeles’ leading trial lawyers will take the case from voir dire through closing argument, using the actual testimony, evidence, and trial record.

You don’t win a jury with your opening statement. You earn the right to have them listen.

At CAALA Vegas 2026, I broke down the opening statement from my landmark Uber trial—and, more importantly, how to deliver an opening that actually connects with a jury.

An opening isn’t just about the words on the page. It’s listening. Being present. Reading the room. Knowing when to slow down, when to move, and when to get out of the way and let the story do the work.

A lot of that comes from what we teach at Improv For Trial. You can prepare like crazy—and you should—but when you’re standing in front of 12 people, you still have to be in the moment.

I’ve been doing this a long time, and I still love talking trial. Even better is getting the chance to pass along some of what I’ve learned to the next generation of trial lawyers.

Thank you CAALA for giving me the stage at Vegas 2026.

Keep trying cases. Keep taking chances. And never stop working on the craft.

Honestly? I’ll take it.

Great competition, great friends, and an unforgettable week in beautiful Costa Rica. From the games in the pool to everything we experienced together outside of it, this tournament is about so much more than water polo.
