The NWS predicts that Kalamazoo will see more frigid temperatures in the coming days. Windchills of -15 degrees are predicted on Friday and -10 degrees on Saturday.
There are several warming shelters and centers available for those in need. Shelters accommodate overnight stays and centers accommodate daytime use. Residents are encouraged to take refuge indoors during periods of extreme cold, snow, or freezing rain. Prolonged exposure to cold weather can quickly lead to hypothermia, frostbite, and other dangerous cold-related medical conditions. According to the National Weather Service, exposed skin can develop frostbite in as little as 30 minutes with -18 degree windchills. The City of Kalamazoo wants to prevent anyone from experiencing cold related injuries or death. The following list includes details on options for warming shelters and centers in the Kalamazoo area.
