The SSD application process involves more than paperwork. It requires patience to get through long processing times.

It generally takes 6 to 8 months for an initial decision after submitting an application. The wait gets even longer when a claim denial requires an appeal.

Our disability benefits team doesn’t sit back and wait. We take a proactive approach by tracking a claim's progress and intervening to prevent or resolve issues that could delay it.

Documenting family assistance provided to a person with a disability may strengthen a claim for SSD benefits.

A need for assistance from family members can be used as evidence that an individual’s medical condition impairs their ability to perform day-to-day activities. Documenting family assistance is essential to supporting a claim for SSD.

Methods of documenting support and assistance from family members include:

👉 Keeping a journal of the dates and types of assistance provided.
👉 Statements from physicians and other healthcare providers confirming the type of assistance and the reason it is required.
👉 Statements of witnesses who observed assistance being needed and provided.

Journal entries should be specific in describing the assistance and the reason for it.

Learning to live on a fixed income is only one of the things to adapt to after an SSD claim is approved.

Here are ways to adapt to life after receiving a notice of approval of a claim for disability benefits:

👉 Create a realistic budget.
👉 Consider working under the SSA’s work incentive programs.
👉 Continue medical treatment.

Keeping appointments with healthcare providers, following treatment plans, and taking prescribed medications are essential to satisfy periodic disability reviews conducted the the SSA.

Life after approval of a claim for SSD benefits can be fulfilling, provided a person understands and follows Social Security rules to retain benefits.

SSD claims with episodic physical or mental health conditions can be difficult to prove; a journal can be valuable evidence of flare-ups.

Medical conditions with symptoms that periodically flare up can be difficult to establish as disabling under the Social Security Administration's standard. A good way to document periods when symptoms affect a person’s ability to perform day-to-day activities, including working, is to keep a journal.

Information to note in a journal about symptom flare-ups includes:

👉 Date and time they occur.
👉 Description of symptoms.
👉 Severity and how long they last.
👉 Limitations experienced during a flare-up.
👉 Effect of prescribed medication on the symptoms.

Common episodic medical conditions include seizure disorders, PTSD, asthma, and bipolar disorder.

Disability benefits generally end at Social Security retirement age, but there is an exception.

Federal law does not allow a person to collect Social Security disability and retirement benefits at the same time from one earnings record. Disability benefits through SSDI end at full retirement age, and retirement benefits begin automatically.

If a person receives disability benefits through SSI and meets Social Security retirement requirements, their SSI benefits may continue. However, the amount of retirement income each month reduces their SSI payment.

How disability benefits work shouldn’t be confusing. Contact the disability team at Muse Disability Services for a free consultation and case evaluation.
