This Memorial Day, we’re taking a moment to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is something we should never forget.

As we spend time with family and friends today, it’s also a time to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because of those who serve with courage and selflessness.

Last week, Head of Professional Development Andrew Sohn and Partners Soniya Khemlani and Sadaf Nejat visited USC Gould School of Law to meet with the Associate Dean of Career Services and the Career Services team for conversations about the future of legal recruiting, long term partnership, and the evolving landscape of legal recruiting and attorney development.

The visit was a valuable opportunity to discuss how law firms and law schools can continue working together to create meaningful experiences for future attorneys as the legal industry and recruiting landscape continue to evolve. Conversations focused on firm values, professional development, attorney training, and building strong connections that help students succeed both personally and professionally. It was also an important opportunity to share where Walsworth was going as a firm.

Walsworth is committed to building future lawyers and designing programs centered on mentorship, attorney development, experiential learning, skills training, and we appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with institutions like USC Gould that share those values.

Thank you to the USC Gould team for the warm welcome. We look forward to what's ahead!

Congratulations to Partner Jennifer Morin on securing a victory for the firm’s client, a commercial electrician, in a highly contested commercial fire case pending since 2021.

Following extensive written and oral argument, the court sustained the dispositive demurrer and granted the anti-SLAPP motion in full, dismissing Walsworth’s client from the litigation without any indemnity payment.

The case stemmed from a large commercial retail center fire and involved years of litigation, multiple consolidated actions, repeated attempts to reassert claims against the client, and additional lawsuits alleging bad faith and fraud. Jennifer successfully challenged each effort and ultimately demonstrated that the plaintiffs’ claims were barred by the applicable statutes of limitation.

An outstanding result and a hard-fought win after years of litigation.

In the legal field, being “busy” is often the norm. Long hours, high stakes, constant pressure.

But behind all of that are people. And people need space to pause, reset, and be supported.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder that it’s okay to check in. Not just on work, but on each other. A quick message, a real conversation, a moment to listen. It matters more than you think.

Last week, Walsworth attorneys, Soniya Khemlani and Kati Smith, attended the 6th Annual Women of California Minority Counsel Program (CMCP) Summit at the Presidio in San Francisco. Set against the backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge, the program brought together attorneys from across California to focus on advancing opportunity, strengthening connections, and building pathways to leadership.

Across the discussions, a consistent theme emerged: the importance of using one’s voice and the critical role sponsorship plays in driving meaningful advancement. Panelists shared practical insights on their career growth and how intentional relationship building, increased visibility, and active engagement with networks creates access to stretch opportunities and leadership roles.

Beyond the panels, the experience highlighted the strength of the community CMCP cultivates. Soniya and Kati had the opportunity to connect with fellow attendees of the Men of CMCP program, reinforcing the value of shared perspective, authentic connection, and continued support across the profession.

We are proud to support and participate in programs like CMCP and look forward to continuing to engage with and contribute to communities that are shaping the future of the legal profession.

Welcome our newest Partner, Abraham “Abe” Berger!

Abe joins our Los Angeles office bringing extensive experience, including more than 22 years at a mid-sized defense firm and serving in-house as Senior Litigation Counsel for a major insurance company. He focuses his practice on toxic tort litigation defending manufacturers, suppliers, and other entities in complex exposure claims.

Abe’s approach to law is shaped by his upbringing in a close-knit, multilingual family that valued hard work, integrity, and understanding different perspectives. Those early experiences taught him the importance of listening and connecting with people, qualities that guide him with clients today.

We’re very glad to have Abe with us and are excited about the impact he will make with our team and clients!

Over the weekend, Walsworth was proud to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley's annual Bocce Ball Championship.

It was a great opportunity for the Walsworth team to spend time together outside the office while also connecting with others in the local community. We loved meeting new faces, strengthening relationships, and building an even stronger sense of teamwork along the way.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley provides a safe, supportive environment where kids can learn, grow, and build confidence, all while being surrounded by mentors who truly care. Their mission helps young people grow into responsible, productive, and caring citizens, making a lasting impact on those around them.

We’re grateful to be part of such a special event and to support the important work they do.

Walsworth Partner Patricia Teunisse and Paralegal Allison Johnson, with support from Associate Dominick Sawaya and Legal Assistant Sonia Gonzalez, secured a favorable verdict following a jury trial in an auto injury case involving admitted liability.

The plaintiff claimed severe, ongoing injuries and multiple surgeries, seeking significant damages. The Walsworth team acknowledged the initial injury while demonstrating that the later procedures and future damages claims were overstated and not supported by the evidence. Despite good faith efforts to resolve the case before trial, ultimately, the plaintiff’s $2.2 million demand made trial necessary.

The case was tried in San Bernardino County Superior Court by women-led teams on both sides (Caitlin Gregg, Sarah Norris, Patricia, and Allison, pictured with trial technician Gordon Maniskas), making it an especially meaningful moment in the courtroom.

The jury returned a verdict awarding limited economic damages, modest past pain and suffering, and no future pain and suffering. The verdict came in well below the defense's offer to compromise under Code of Civil Procedure section 998, entitling Walsworth’s client to recover significant post-offer costs.

Great work by the entire team on an outstanding result!
