Mike’s Rule #10: Hire an attorney quickly, and never give a recorded statement to the other side’s insurance.

That adjuster works for the insurance company, not for you. Get the right legal advice before you say a single word on the record.

Mike’s Rule #9: Save everything.

All of it. Prescription from the pharmacy? Save the receipt. Copay out of pocket? Save it. Missed a day of work? Start a log and write down every day you missed. Rough night with the pain? Note that too, like “pain was a 5 or 6 tonight.”

It feels like overkill in the moment, but this is what proves your losses. The more evidence we have means the stronger your case.

Mike’s Rule #8: Notify your own insurance company fast.

Let them know you’ve been in an accident as soon as possible. In Utah, your policy includes PIP (personal injury protection), which covers the first $3,000 of your medical bills through your own insurance no matter who was at fault.

Getting that claim filed early gets your treatment covered while we go to work against the other side. Do not sit on it.

Mike’s Rule #7: See a doctor right away after an accident, even if you feel fine.

Some of the worst injuries show up days later. Injuries can have a delayed onset, so feeling okay at the scene doesn’t mean you’re in the clear (especially with all that adrenaline running, which might mask an injury). Get seen quickly so your injuries are diagnosed early and on the record.

Waiting is the gap the insurance company uses to argue you weren’t really hurt.

What happens when you hire us (or any attorney)? This is the full claims process in Utah explained from start to finish.

First, you sign an engagement letter, and from that moment on we deal with the insurance company so you don’t have to. Then. we get you into treatment either with your provider or one we help you find. While you heal, we build your file.

Once you’ve recovered as much as you’re going to, we put together your demand and negotiate. If the number’s right, we settle and get you your check. If it’s not, we file suit and take it as far as it needs to go, all the way to sharing your story with a jury if needed.

Your only job is to get better while we handle the rest.

Mike’s Rule #6: Don’t admit fault at the scene.

Don’t apologize. Don’t speculate about what you think happened. There’s a lot of evidence to sort through before anyone can say who’s responsible and a guess in the moment can be used against you later.

That adrenaline will be pumping and it’ll tell you you’re fine, but you don’t know that until you’ve been checked out. So take a breath and stay calm. Saying nothing is often the smartest thing you can do.

By now you’ve probably seen it. A bull bison at Yellowstone launching a man 8 feet in the air.

So, who’s liable when an animal hurts someone?

Animals fall under strict liability, which means the owner can be on the hook even if they didn’t do anything. Who counts as the responsible owner depends on where it happens:

Fenced in: the animal’s owner has a duty to fence their property and keep their animals contained. If one gets out and hurts someone, that’s on the owner.

Fenced out: the burden flips. It’s on everyone else to fence the animals out of their own property. If you don’t, the animal’s owner may not be liable.

This bison incident happened on national park land, so the owner is the federal government. They are shielded by governmental immunity, so, as wild as this video is, there’s likely no claim at all.

Mike’s Rule #5: Document the scene before you leave.

Photos of the weather, road conditions, any signs, and everything else in your vicinity. If witnesses stopped, grab their name and number. The best time to get evidence is right then, not later. It can be completely gone once you drive away.

Can the driver get any compensation for this accident? Personal injury lawyer reacts.

08/10/2026

Rule #4: Always collect the other driver’s info at the scene.

If you can, let the police pull it for you. If they can’t come, get it yourself:

- Photo of their driver’s license
- Photo of their insurance card
- Photo of their license plate
- Their address and phone number

Skip this and you’re stuck if they decide to stop cooperating later. Two minutes at the scene can save you months of chasing someone down.

Been in a wreck in Utah? Get checked and then talk to a lawyer before you talk to other party’s insurance.
