Move this to the top of the list before packing up the family truckster and heading off to college.
As we prepare to ship our precious teens to college, some of them for the first time, some returning after the summer break, consider this.
Between the shower shoes, laundry soap, and boxes of their favorite snacks, it probably hasn't occured to you that "technically" your 18 year old is an adult. You’re coping with that reality just fine… yes? That is, until you try to call their doctor or do the banking that you've been doing since you first opened their kiddo savings when they were just babies (could it really have been 18 years ago??). It's only then when you get the painful realization that you're no longer the all knowing and all seeing parent.
It may surprise you to know that the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ("HIPAA") effectively blocks you for handling all the routine (or not so routine) medical decisions that you've been doing for them their whole life. The family pediatrician probably still chats with you when you take them in for sports checkups but when they are off to college the clinic isn't going to be so accommodating. That can be unnerving, especially in the case of an emergency. A power of attorney for health care decisions can be the solution. Your teen appoint you to make health care decisions when they can't and, more importantly, get information about their health care from their doctors.
Beyond health care, a power of attorney can get you access to your child's financial world, including grades, financial aid, and banking information. It is a scary thought to let your 18 year old out into the world (and PAY for it) and to not know if they are passing, attending, incurring debt, etc. Rather than being a way to hold them back as they work to become independent, a power of attorney simply allows you to continue to be a support system while they figure out how to use a washer and dryer for the first time, and struggle against the freshman fifteen.
These documents are painless to have prepared but provide a comfort level you'll otherwise be missing. Please consider adding this to the packing list along with that new laptop and family pic.
Trust me, you'll be glad you did!
