Legal Aid Chicago

Legal Aid Chicago Legal Aid Chicago provides high-quality civil legal services to low-income and disadvantaged people The American legal system is complex for anyone.

But for someone who is living in poverty and unable to hire an attorney, our legal system is downright intimidating. For more than 50 years, LAF has provided people living in poverty in metropolitan Chicago with free professional legal services. Each year, LAF makes equal justice a reality, impacting the lives of about 30,000 of the most vulnerable members of our community. Each issue is unique, a

nd each of LAF’s 80 full-time attorneys and staff gives their clients individualized attention. Their work results in such successes as the gaining custody of a child, obtaining an order of protection against an abusive spouse, preventing an unfair eviction, or getting justice for a victim of consumer fraud. LAF’s work starts by making the legal system accessible to clients and concludes with a resolution that changes their lives and gets them back on track. LAF’s work is more important than ever. The number of people living in poverty in Cook County has increased by half a million people. In a single year, LAF helped over 1,600 families whose homes were in foreclosure. In that same year, LAF kept 6,400 people from homelessness by preventing unfair evictions or saving subsidized housing vouchers. Furthermore, 60 percent of LAF’s clients are women, many of them raising children on their own. Today, governmental budget cuts are a financial reality. But LAF’s services have never been more needed. So LAF relies on private donations to fulfill its mission.

Legal Aid Chicago is proud to launch the Fi****ms Warrant Project. Attorneys from Legal Aid Chicago are on site daily at the Domestic Violence Courthouse to help survivors pursue firearm remedies under Karina’s Law. Our attorneys provide legal advice, brief services, and full representation for survivors seeking protection from respondents with access to fi****ms.

The presence of a firearm in a domestic violence situation significantly increases the risk of homicide. Yet many survivors seeking emergency orders of protection and firearm surrender remedies are navigating this process alone.

Through the Fi****ms Warrant Project, Legal Aid Chicago aims to:

✦ Ensure survivors have access to legal representation when seeking firearm remedies
✦ Strengthen collaboration with law enforcement to support effective implementation of Karina’s Law
✦ Advance the law’s intent and impact through appellate advocacy

At Legal Aid Chicago we believe survivors deserve meaningful protection, strong advocacy, and systems that respond with urgency and accountability.

Some SNAP recipients must now show that they are meeting a work requirement to keep their benefits. This means completing 80 hours per month (about 20 hours per week) of: paid work, unpaid work, job training, volunteering, or a combination of these.

Many SNAP recipients do not have to meet this requirement at all because they qualify for an exemption. Since February, Legal Aid Chicago has been helping people request exemptions and correct eligibility mistakes. We are seeing that many people qualify but have not been identified as exempt yet by the Department of Human Services (DHS).

Do not guess about your eligibility. Get clear answers.

SNAP food assistance cutoffs begin Friday in Illinois.

Thank you to the Chicago Sun-Times for covering this important story. Please click below to read the article:

About 120,000 people statewide are expected to lose SNAP food support starting in May because of President Donald Trump’s expanded work and volunteer rules.

04/29/2026

Many SNAP recipients who should qualify for exemptions are confused about their status or are unsure what steps to take. Others are not receiving clear information about whether the rules apply to them at all.

Since February, Legal Aid Chicago has been helping SNAP recipients request exemptions and correct eligibility mistakes. We are seeing that many people qualify but have not been identified as exempt yet by the Department of Human Services (DHS).

Do not assume DHS got it right. Legal Aid Chicago can help you understand your rights and next steps.
