It is with extreme sadness that we announce that our partner, friend, and colleague, Amy McCarty , passed away January 11, 2026. Amy brought an irreplaceable light and energy to our firm for over 20 years. Many are aware of Amy’s legal expertise and accomplishments, which were numerous. She had a formidable combination of intellect and compassion that she applied to all she did, whether representing our clients in complex guardianship and mental health cases; tackling pro bono matters, which she approached with the same care and attention as all her other cases; or volunteering for the many local non-profit organizations she cared so deeply about.

But what we, as her friends and colleagues, will miss most is Amy’s heart. She was a mentor to many of us at the firm, always teaching, supporting, and making herself available no matter how “in demand” she was. She was fun and adventurous, brilliant and hilarious, authentic and fierce, and we will forever treasure our memories with her.

It was an honor for Joe Monahan to present a legal perspective at the Endeavor Behavioral Emergency Summit at Highland Park Hospital on Thursday, December 11, 2025. There was an important discussion concerning the challenges faced by first responders and emergency department personnel as they addressed emergency mental health issues. Fire, Police, EMS, Emergency Department, social workers and other community professionals attended, asked questions, made observations, identified problems and proposed solutions.

Adoption can be one of the most challenging yet certainly is one of the most rewarding parts of family law. Our very own Ashley Edison Reed has been at the forefront of adoptions here at Monahan Law Group, LLC . Ashley has worked with dozens of families here to help the children be solidified in their forever home. There are times when the backgrounds of these children and families are heart breaking, emotional, and closure may seem unattainable. Our team at Monahan Law Group works very hard to make adoptions happen for every family.

On Friday Ashley was able to be part of the Cook County Circuit Court's National Adoption Day ceremony representing 1 of the 12 children who were officially placed with their forever families. It was a very emotional and happy day for all of the participants and was even featured on a NBC 5 News broadcast. Adoption is a journey that often begins well before the legal process and our adoption team at Monahan Law Group feels fortunate to be a part of the beginning of the next chapter of the children and families lives.

Monahan Law Group was a proud sponsor of the Celebrity Chef Ball last week. The event was a huge success. Over 50 chefs came together to showcase their culinary passions and we were able to partake in this dining experience. All of this happened to support Meals on Wheels Chicago and its goal to raise funds and awareness of the need to feed Chicago's seniors and people with disabilities.

World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10th every year, and we sported any green we had in observance of it! The theme for World Mental Health Day 2025 is: “Mental Health in Humanitarian Emergencies.” This year it is to bring awareness of the importance of prioritizing mental health when people are affected by crises whether it be natural disasters, economic concerns, social conflicts, government controls, or even a pandemic. Governments, community groups, the healthcare providers and all of us as individuals need to ensure that there is help put in place to help people get through an emergency situation.
