San Diego Zoo Safari Park has officially opened Elephant Valley, a brand new habitat designed to bring visitors closer than ever to these incredible animals 🐘
The new space is the largest expansion in the San Diego Zoo’s 109-year history and gives the elephant herd a much larger environment to roam, explore, and socialize, complete with mud baths, watering holes, and enrichment areas designed for these highly intelligent animals.
The Safari Park opens an hour early once a month for members, and this weekend I got an up-close look at Elephant Valley. Eight elephants were roaming together searching for breakfast hidden throughout the habitat—from tree trunks to high in the canopy. I’m pretty sure we even saw a baby nursing!
Elephants are one of my favorite animals. Experiences like this are a good reminder that zoos play an important role in conservation and education—helping people connect with wildlife so we care enough to protect it 🤍

One of San Diego’s most loved hikes, Torrey Pines, is set to reopen this spring — and it got me thinking about some of my favorite local trails 👟
One of the best parts of living here is how easy it is to step outside and be in nature within minutes. Whether you’re meeting friends for a walk or taking your dog 🐾 out for some sunshine and fresh air, there’s always somewhere new to explore.
Here are 5 trails worth adding to your list ⬇️
1. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve (La Jolla)
A classic for a reason. Incredible ocean views, wildflowers in spring, and several trail options depending on how far you want to go.
2. Agua Hedionda Lagoon Trail (Carlsbad) — Dog Friendly 🐾
A local favorite. Flat, easy, and perfect for a relaxed walk with beautiful water views and great sunsets. One of the best everyday walking spots in North County.
3. Annie’s Canyon Trail (Solana Beach)
Short but fun — the sandstone slot canyon section feels like a mini adventure, and the overlook at the top is worth the climb.
4. Lake Calavera Preserve (Carlsbad) — Dog Friendly 🐾
Great if you want a little elevation. You can hike up to the volcanic peak for views or stick to the easier loop trails around the base. Very popular with locals and dog walkers.
5. Los Peñasquitos Canyon Trail (Rancho Peñasquitos) — Dog Friendly 🐾
Wide, shaded trail that leads to a small waterfall (especially nice after rain). Perfect for longer walks, runners, and energetic pups.
