Carlsbad has about seven miles of coastline, and every stretch has its own personality.

Tamarack is probably the name most people know. It’s been a local surf gathering spot for decades, with a history that goes all the way back to the “soul surfer” days of the ’70s and ’80s. The scene has mellowed considerably since then, but it’s still one of those places where you’ll see people paddling out before work, after school, or basically whenever the ocean looks too good to ignore.

Head a little farther south and you’ve got Terramar, a smaller, tucked-away break with a much more local feel. It’s especially loved by longboarders, and at low tide the tide pools alone are worth stopping for.

Then there’s Ponto, where things can get a little punchier. South Ponto is one of the wider, more open beaches in the area and has long been a popular surf spot, while the jetties can produce quicker, steeper waves for more experienced surfers.

Pretty rad little town we get to call home. 🤙🌊
