Is Independent Living Right for You?

Mention independent living to a group of homeowners over 55 and you'll probably get several different reactions.

Some love the idea. Others aren't interested. And some aren't quite sure what independent living actually means.

It's not the same as assisted living. And considering it doesn't mean you're giving up your independence.

The real question is whether the lifestyle fits the way you want to live.

I've written an article about what to consider before making that decision, including some questions that may not immediately come to mind.

You might decide independent living is exactly what you're looking for.

Or you might decide you're perfectly happy where you are.

Both are good answers.

What Do You Do With 20 or 30 Years of Your Life?

If you've lived in the same home for a long time, you probably suffer from TMS — Too Much Stuff.

With over 30 years helping clients navigate Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Boynton Beach homes, I’ve seen firsthand how Florida’s unique environment—sand, clay pockets, humidity, and those infamous storms—can challenge even the best-built properties. During your inspection, it’s crucial to dig deeper for signs of hidden moisture or drainage issues, since these can become costly headaches down the road. I always recommend checking for moisture readings and taking a close look at yard slope, gutters, and any exterior wall stains; water pooling near the foundation is often where major repairs begin. Watch for musty odors, slight warping, lower-wall stains, quick cosmetic touchups, newer sections of flooring, or white residue on concrete—all subtle signals that there may be moisture lurking beneath the surface. If you’re thinking of updating flooring, address drainage, test and seal slabs first, and consider porcelain tile or high-quality luxury vinyl plank—both are strong choices in our climate.
