🌟 BCAAR Grant Spotlight: Creating Greater Independence for People with Disabilities

With support from the BCAAR Grant Fund, Disability Network Southwest Michigan helped provide a safe, accessible home entryway ramp for a local resident with mobility needs. The funding, combined with support from another grant, helped make it possible for a 72-year-old Albion woman living with cancer to safely enter and leave her home.

Beyond the support made possible by the BCAAR grant, DNSWM’s Battle Creek Area Independent Living Initiative focuses on removing barriers to independent living, including housing, transportation, and access to assistive devices and home modifications.

• A safe, ADA-compliant ramp provided greater accessibility and independence
• The ramp allows the resident to safely leave and return home for healthcare, work, and community activities
• The Ramp Up program helps people with disabilities participate more fully in their communities

🚨 Consumer Alert: Beware of Fake Real Estate Listings on TikTok 🚨
We've seen a significant increase in fraudulent TikTok accounts advertising homes for rent or vacant land that aren't actually available. These scams are designed to trick people into sending money or sharing personal information.

🔎 Watch for these red flags:
• The account is brand new or has very few followers.
• Comments are turned off or full of people saying the listing is fake.
• The price seems far below market value.
• The poster asks you to send a deposit or application fee before seeing the property.
• They claim they're out of town and can't show the property.
• The listing has little information or uses photos that appear on multiple websites.

🛡️ How to protect yourself:
✅ Verify the property through a trusted real estate website or by contacting a local real estate professional.
✅ Search the property address online to see if it appears elsewhere with different information.
✅ Never send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers to secure a property you haven't verified.
✅ If a listing seems too good to be true, it probably is.
If you come across a suspicious listing, report the account to TikTok and avoid engaging with the scammer.

Yesterday, we wrapped up a jam-packed New Member Orientation for our newest REALTOR® members! 🏡✨

Over the course of two days, agents participated in a variety of courses designed to ensure they have the information, resources, and knowledge they need as they begin their real estate journey. From industry essentials to local insights, it was all about setting them up for success.
