Today, justice prevailed.

We are incredibly proud to have represented a man who was wrongfully accused of one of the most serious crimes imaginable. From the beginning, we believed in the importance of testing every allegation, challenging every assumption, and holding the State to its burden of proof.

After countless hours of investigation, preparation, and advocacy, the jury returned the only verdict supported by the evidence:

Not Guilty.

There is no greater privilege than standing beside someone whose future hangs in the balance and fighting to ensure that accusations are tested by facts, not fear. Today, our client walks out of court with his freedom, and we could not be more grateful to have stood with him.

Last week we walked into a Travis County courtroom facing an application for a protective order against our client. We walked out with the application denied and the temporary order vacated.

A protective order can affect a person’s freedom for years: where they live, where they work, who they are allowed to see. When the stakes are that high, our clients deserve a defense that shows up ready and fights for every inch.�

What happens at magistration in Austin, Texas?

Magistration is the first court appearance after an arrest. In Travis County, the magistrate reads the person their rights, reviews the probable cause affidavit, decides whether probable cause exists, and sets bail and conditions of release.

What happens at this first appearance can affect whether a personal bond is possible, the amount of bail, the conditions of release, and how long it takes to get out of jail.

CMK Defense participated in the CAFA pilot program and worked the first CAFA shift in Travis County. We continue working those shifts today. We know the people, procedures, and points where delays happen because we work inside this system.

Before paying bail, talk to CMK Defense. A personal bond may be possible, and a hold may prevent immediate release even after bond is posted.
