There’s this funny story I read somewhere and I thought it was worth sharing.

A couple had been married for five years without having a child. Eventually, their marriage broke down and they got divorced.

After the divorce, the woman went to her ex-husband’s house to collect the rest of her belongings because he had refused to waybill or send them to her.

As soon as she arrived, old memories resurfaced. One thing led to another, and before long, they found themselves back in the same bed.

The person who accompanied her to help collect the luggage ended up waiting in vain because what was supposed to be a brief visit turned into a two week stay. The man simply would not let her leave.

By the end of the unexpected “vacation” she discovered she was pregnant.

Sometimes life has a sense of humour. The same marriage that ended partly because there was no child produced one only after the couple had already divorced.

I waited for the Nigeria Police Force to issue its disclaimer regarding this video before offering my opinion, observations, and conclusions. You may also choose to do the same.

The Police, without presenting any verifiable proof, identified the men in the video as members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) or a Joint Task Force. However, a closer look at the footage shows individuals dressed in military-style camouflage and carrying what appear to be military-grade weapons, including machine guns and other heavy armaments.

Since when did the VGN begin wearing military camouflage and carrying such sophisticated weapons? The police officer seen in the video did not appear to make any effort to identify the individuals. Was “VGN” written on their foreheads?

Assuming, without conceding, that they are indeed members of the VGN, how can the Nigerian government permit a vigilante group to dress in a manner that is virtually indistinguishable from terrorists, bandits, or regular military personnel?

Personally, I am not convinced that these individuals are members of the VGN. More importantly, I find it difficult to believe that the Police could, within less than 24 hours, conclusively determine their identity as local vigilantes without providing the public with the evidence upon which that conclusion was reached.

A video is currently trending online showing a convoy of men on motorcycles being hailed or waved at by two individuals dressed in police camouflage uniforms.

At this stage, it is unclear who the men on the motorcycles are. There is no verified information confirming whether they are members of a civilian security outfit, such as the Civilian JTF, or terrorists. It is equally unclear whether the individuals in police camouflage are serving police officers.

Given the uncertainty surrounding the video, speculation should be avoided. However, the incident raises legitimate public concerns and calls for clarification from the relevant authorities.

The Nigeria Police Force is in the best position to investigate the video and provide the public with an accurate account of what transpired. A prompt and transparent response would help dispel rumours, address public concerns, and ensure that misinformation does not gain traction.

The number of security personnel present in court, as seen in this video, for just one man is worrisome.

Omoyele Sowore’s alleged offence was referring to the President as a “criminal.” He neither killed anyone nor is he accused of terrorism. He is not a danger to anyone, nor does he pose a threat to the proceedings before the court.

He had been on bail and only missed a court appearance, which led to the revocation of his bail. In my view, that order may soon be set aside and he could regain his freedom.

So why do we have this overwhelming deployment of security personnel in court? What exactly is going on?

Many Nigerians are currently in the forests and bushes, held captive by terrorists and kidnappers, yet we rarely see this level of manpower mobilised for their rescue.

But here we are, deploying heavily armed tactical personnel for what appears to be media optics and intimidation. One cannot help but question whether our security priorities are properly aligned.

When I tell junior officers in the Police Force to be careful about the kind of assignments they undertake or the things they do at the behest of their superiors, this is exactly what I mean.

Take the case of the DPO of Oyigbo, who is currently under investigation over allegations relating to unlawful remand and extortion. Then compare it with the case of the officer at Old GRA who was caught on video allegedly receiving money at a checkpoint.

Now look at the reportage issued by the Agabe Blessing Kaborlo PPRO Rivers Command on both incidents. The ASP’s name was publicly mentioned, yet the DPO, a CSP, was shielded from similar exposure.

This is the reality of the system many officers operate in. When things go wrong, the subordinate officer is often left to face the consequences, while senior officers are sometimes insulated from public scrutiny. That is why officers must exercise caution and ensure that any instruction they carry out is lawful, proper, and capable of being defended if questions later arise.

To the Nigeria Police Force why are you covering the name CSP Ugochukwu?

This video of a woman being flogged for alleged infidelity is wholly condemnable.

It is unconstitutional to administer punishment on any person without due process of law. No individual has the moral or legal authority to punish another person for alleged infidelity.

While a married woman engaging in consensual sexual relations with another man may be considered morally wrong by some, it is not a criminal offence under our law.

The woman in this video may have grounds to institute legal action for torture, inhuman and degrading treatment, as well as other remedies available under both criminal and civil law.

Do not be part of this kind of jungle justice.

When I keep saying that the best way to improve our institutions is to have judges who are ready to protect the interest of the common people, I do not mince words.

Have you all noticed that since Justice Hyeladzira A. Nganjiwa of the Warri High Court delivered a judgment empowering citizens to take videos of police officers on duty while they perform their search duties, the conduct of most police officers has improved?

Most of you don't actually know what led to this case.

Sometime around May 10, 2025, a legal practitioner named Maxwell Nosakhare Uwaifo was travelling from Benin to Warri when he was stopped by police officers near the Sapele Roundabout who wanted to conduct a search on him.

The officers aggressively questioned him.

While they were at it arguing, he noticed something very surprising.

Their vehicle, a black Toyota Sienna, had no police inscriptions, no official markings, and entirely lacked license plate numbers.

He also noticed that none of the men wore name tags, uniform badges, or displayed force numbers. Neither did they agree to properly identify themselves.

At that point, he was afraid of possible harassment, so he attempted to record their activities with his mobile phone.

However, when the officers aggressively threatened him, he was forced to comply with their demands.

Barrister Maxwell later approached the Federal High Court, asking the court to determine whether it was proper for police officers to be on duty without visible name tags identifying them as officers of the law.

He also asked the court to determine whether it was legal for citizens to record police officers while carrying out searches without being harassed for doing so.

Fortunately, Justice Hyeladzira A. Nganjiwa gave a landmark judgment.

The judge held that all police officers are legally mandated to wear visible name tags and display their force numbers while on duty.

But the judge did not stop there.

He also held that the Police are barred from harassing, intimidating, arresting, or confiscating phones and recording devices from citizens documenting public operations.

Among other reliefs granted, Maxwell was awarded five million naira as damages.

The beautiful thing about this judgment is that the Nigeria Police Force did not appeal it. Rather, they accepted it as part of ongoing police reforms.

As a Nigerian citizen, whenever you see Bar. Maxwell Nosakhare Uwaifo or Justice Hyeladzira A. Nganjiwa, tell them thank you because you, as a Nigerian, are the major beneficiary of that judgment.
