The police officer captured in the viral video making ethnically and politically charged remarks has been identified as Insp. Osumah Frank.

Frank was filmed stating that Peter Obi, or any other Igbo person, can never become President of Nigeria, among other political and ethnic remarks.

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed his identity and commenced disciplinary action against him in accordance with the established regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Command also made it clear that the remarks were made in his personal capacity and do not represent the official position or views of the Nigeria Police Force.

Hopefully, this will serve as a reminder that police officers, particularly when in uniform, are expected to maintain professionalism, discipline and respect for all members of the public.

This young man shared a video of his first encounter with the police, and I can’t help but notice some of the mistakes he made and how he allowed the police officers to take advantage of the situation.

Firstly, no matter what the allegation may be, never voluntarily hand over your phone to the police. If they have reasonable grounds to suspect that your phone contains evidence of a crime, they should follow due process and obtain the appropriate court order where required by law.

Secondly, always call the appropriate Force Headquarters line and put the situation on record. The officers involved should also be identified and their conduct documented.

Record your interactions with the police whenever it is lawful and safe to do so. Document what happened, the officers involved, the time and place, and any relevant details.

Remember, when a police officer demands to search your phone, don’t voluntarily create evidence against yourself by opening it for them. The fact that an officer suspects that your phone may contain evidence does not, by itself, mean you should surrender access to its contents.

Know your rights, remain calm, and insist that the police follow the law and due process.

This is very condemnable. A young man ran a suspected police man down and ran away.

As much as we may have legitimate reasons to criticise the conduct of some police officers, we must also acknowledge that there are genuinely good men and women in uniform who are doing their jobs and serving the public.

Assaulting a police officer should not become a trend or something to be encouraged. Hopefully, the Nigeria Police Force will identify and apprehend this young man so that the appropriate legal process can take its course.

This looks comical, but it actually reflects a harsh reality of how the system can operate: the citizen is often treated as the owner when there is liability to be imposed, but suddenly treated as though he has no meaningful proprietary interest when he seeks to enforce his rights.

I have actually made a similar argument in Court. When money suspected to be proceeds of fraud is transferred into your bank account, the bank can quickly involve the police or EFCC, and you may become the subject of an investigation simply because the funds passed through your account.

But when you sue the bank for unlawfully restricting, freezing or interfering with your account and allege a violation of your constitutional right to own and enjoy property, the same bank may turn around and argue that you are not the owner of the money in the account or that your interest is merely contractual.

That is the irony.

When the system wants to hold you responsible, your connection to the money suddenly becomes very important. But when you demand protection of your rights over that same account, the argument can suddenly become: “You don’t own it".

This is why I have never had a tattoo or any other identifiable mark.

There’s no way you can wear a distinctive tattoo and completely conceal your identity. Even when you’re not involved in crime, having a visible tattoo can make it easier for your enemies to identify or track you.

All it takes is for someone to describe the tattoo to others, and you could easily be spotted.

This young man covered his face, not realizing that his most identifiable feature would eventually give him away.
