The NBA offers a unique National platform that is not available to any other Civil or professional organization in Nigeria. The NBA renews its leadership every two years when it elects a new President and other officials. The tenure of elected officials of the NBA runs for two years and is non-renewable.

Happy 50th Birthday to my dear brother, friend, and partner in service, Mr. Sabastine Anyia, the 1st Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association and Chairman of the NBA Human Rights Institute.

Today is more than a celebration of age; it is a celebration of a life devoted to service, justice, loyalty, and humanity. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working closely with you and witnessing firsthand your calm strength, sincerity, compassion, and commitment to the ideals of the Bar and the protection of human rights.

Through every challenge and responsibility, you have remained steadfast, dependable, and deeply principled. Beyond your leadership roles, I celebrate the remarkable man that you are; humble, wise, generous in spirit, and fiercely committed to the wellbeing of others. Your friendship and support over the years have been truly invaluable to me.

RELEASE EUNICE AMEH NOW!

When a young lawyer goes missing, the pain is not distant to the Nigerian Bar Association, it is personal. We are more than a professional body; we are a community bound by shared sacrifice, shared dreams, and a collective duty to stand for one another. The disappearance of Miss Eunice Ameh, our dear colleague and a young Nigerian serving her country through the NYSC scheme, has therefore deeply shaken the entire legal community.

Behind every missing person report is a family unable to sleep, friends clinging to hope, and colleagues praying for safe return. No young Nigerian who answered the call to national service should disappear without an immediate, coordinated, and determined response from our security agencies.

We therefore call on the Inspector General of Police to urgently deploy all necessary tactical and intelligence resources toward securing Eunice’s safe release and ensuring that anyone connected to her disappearance is swiftly brought to justice.

This is not a moment for routine assurances. Every passing hour matters, and every effort must count.

We stand firmly with her family, friends, and colleagues in this painful time, and we urge anyone with useful information to cooperate with the authorities so that Eunice Ameh can safely return home.

CONFLICTING JUDGMENTS: NBA PRESIDENT CALLS FOR URGENT JUDICIAL REFORMS

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has called for urgent judicial reforms to address the growing trend of conflicting judgments in Nigeria’s courts, warning that the situation is creating uncertainty in the legal system and eroding public confidence in the administration of justice.

Speaking at the Law Week of the NBA Anaocha Branch themed “Justice Delivery and Prevailing Conflicting Judgements: An Imperative for Urgent Judicial Reforms,” the NBA President lamented that lawyers are increasingly finding it difficult to advise clients with certainty on what the law is, particularly in political cases where courts deliver conflicting decisions on similar issues.

He also noted that the uncertainty extends to disciplinary proceedings involving legal practitioners, especially regarding appeals from decisions of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC). According to him, some affected lawyers have been referred by the Supreme Court to a non-existent Appeals Committee of the Body of Benchers, creating confusion within the disciplinary process.

Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, stressed that certainty, consistency, and predictability are essential pillars of justice delivery and called for urgent reforms and a renewed judicial attitude to restore confidence in the legal system.

He commended the NBA Anaocha Branch for choosing such a timely and thought-provoking theme for its Law Week programme.

“AWKA NEC 2026: Defending the Rule of Law, Protecting the Bar, and Repositioning the Future of Legal Practice”

Yesterday in Awka, Anambra State, I presented my Executive Report to the National Executive Council of the Nigerian Bar Association at a defining moment for our Association and our nation.

Our deliberations focused on critical issues affecting the legal profession and Nigeria as a whole, judicial independence, protection of human rights, police brutality, abuse of criminal process, constitutional governance, and the urgent need to strengthen public confidence in the administration of justice.

NEC also considered key reforms aimed at repositioning the Bar for the future. As part of our digital transformation agenda, we introduced the NBA Smart Identity Card Initiative and the NBA Digital Signature Studio to promote a more modern, secure, and technology-driven legal profession.

We further examined matters relating to the welfare of lawyers and judicial officers, professional discipline, legal education, and the integrity of the NBA electoral process.

As I stated at the meeting, the administration of justice can only thrive where the Bench and the Bar operate in mutual respect, courage, discipline, and fidelity to the rule of law.

I remain grateful to members of NEC, our Branches, Sections, Fora, Committees, and every member of the Bar for their commitment and support.

BUILDING A STRONGER BAR

Yesterday, I witnessed yet another powerful reminder that the strength of the Nigerian Bar is not measured only by the arguments we make in courtrooms, but also by the institutions we build for the welfare, unity, and growth of our members. It was therefore a great pleasure to join colleagues at the NBA Onitsha Branch for the commissioning of the Branch Lounge and Gym, a bold and commendable project that reflects visionary leadership and a deep commitment to member well-being.

I warmly commend the Chairman, Executive Committee, and entire members of the NBA Onitsha Branch for this remarkable achievement. The establishment of these facilities goes beyond infrastructure; it represents an intentional investment in the health, relaxation, camaraderie, and professional bonding of lawyers within the branch.

The NBA Onitsha Branch has consistently distinguished itself through purposeful initiatives and progressive strides that continue to inspire confidence in the future of our Association. This project is another shining testament to what can be achieved when leadership is driven by service, foresight, and collective commitment.

As we continue to build a Bar that works for all, I encourage other branches to emulate this admirable example of innovation and member-focused leadership.

NEC NOTICES WERE ISSUED TO ALL MEMBERS

The attention of the Office of the General Secretary has been drawn to a publication purporting to question the legitimacy of the National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting scheduled to hold on Thursday, 7th May 2026, in Awka, Anambra State, on the premise that some NEC members were excluded from receiving notices of the meeting.

For the avoidance of doubt, notices of the NEC Meeting were duly issued and sent to the official email addresses of all members of NEC on record from the Office of the General Secretary, in line with established practice and the provisions of the NBA Constitution.

Importantly, the date and venue for this NEC Meeting were fixed at the last NEC Meeting held in Maiduguri, Borno State, on 5th February 2026, where the meeting was formally adjourned to Thursday, 7th May 2026, in Awka, Anambra State.

It is therefore misleading to suggest that any category of members was excluded from receiving notices of the meeting on account of perceived dissenting views. Indeed, following the issuance of the notices, several NEC members confirmed their attendance through the office of the Welfare Secretary, Mr. Auta Nyada, in preparation for the meeting.

The NBA under the present leadership remains firmly committed to constitutionalism, inclusiveness, due process, and the unity of the Bar. Accordingly, the NBA has not and will not exclude any member of NEC from participating in NEC.

Members of the Association are therefore advised to disregard the publication in its entirety. The NEC Meeting scheduled for Thursday, 7th May 2026, remains validly convened and will proceed as scheduled.

NBA PRESIDENT LEADS DELEGATION ON COURTESY VISIT TO ANAMBRA ATTORNEY-GENERAL AHEAD OF NEC MEETING

As part of activities preceding the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting scheduled to hold on Thursday, May 7, 2026, in Awka, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, led a delegation of the Association on a courtesy visit to the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Anambra State, Mr. Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN.

The visit formed part of the NBA’s ongoing engagement with key stakeholders in the justice sector aimed at strengthening institutional relationships and fostering collaboration in the administration of justice.

During the meeting, discussions focused on deepening cooperation between the Bar and the Ministry of Justice, advancing justice sector reforms, and reinforcing the shared commitment of both institutions to the promotion of the rule of law and efficient justice delivery in Anambra State and across Nigeria.

Speaking during the visit, the NBA President emphasized the importance of sustained synergy between the Bar and government institutions in driving reforms that would enhance public confidence in the justice system and improve access to justice for citizens.

The delegation was warmly received by the Attorney-General, Mr. Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, who reaffirmed the commitment of the Anambra State Ministry of Justice to upholding legal professionalism, strengthening the justice system, and supporting initiatives that advance the administration of justice.

The NBA President expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded the delegation and commended the Attorney-General for his dedication to legal excellence and progressive justice administration.

The courtesy visit is one of several activities lined up ahead of the NBA NEC Meeting in Awka, which is expected to bring together leaders of the Bar from across the country to deliberate on issues affecting the legal profession and national development.
