It's always interesting to see how people's search criteria change. As recently as a couple of years ago, almost every conversation started with Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka.

Now, we're seeing more buyers looking for somewhere with a different balance—space, affordability, access to nature, or just a slower pace of life without feeling completely isolated.

That doesn't mean these areas are "hidden gems" or guaranteed investments. Every town has its own strengths, challenges, and trade-offs, which is exactly why we spend so much time researching them. Some of the places we've highlighted are already on your radar. Others probably aren't.

We'd be curious to know which areas here surprised you the most, and if there's a town you think deserves a closer look, there's a good chance it's already sitting somewhere on our research list.

Some towns become famous because of tourism.

Others become famous because they've spent centuries making something the rest of the world wants.

Tokoname is the second.

For more than 1,000 years, potters here have been producing ceramics that are now recognized across Japan and internationally. Even today, you'll find working studios, family-run workshops, climbing kilns, and streets where craftsmanship is still part of daily life—not simply preserved as history.

That authenticity is one of Tokoname's biggest strengths.

Unlike destinations that rely heavily on seasonal tourism, Tokoname has a real local economy supported by manufacturing, artisans, nearby industry, and the international airport just minutes away. That creates a much more balanced foundation than many rural towns.

From a property perspective, we find Tokoname particularly interesting because it offers several different opportunities. Traditional homes can appeal to buyers looking for character, while former workshops and mixed-use buildings may suit artists, cafés, galleries, or small accommodation projects. Its proximity to Chubu Centrair International Airport also makes it unusually accessible for both domestic and overseas visitors.

When we research towns for our Premium Newsletter, we don't just ask whether somewhere is beautiful.

We ask whether it has a story, a sustainable local economy, strong transport links, and qualities that can't easily be replicated elsewhere.

Tokoname is one of the places that consistently stands out.

This is just one of the towns featured in a previous edition of our Premium Newsletter.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is people treating an entire prefecture like a single property market.

In reality, every town has its own story.

Within Aichi alone, you can find protected Edo-period merchant districts, pottery towns with over 1,000 years of history, coastal resort communities, established commuter cities, and traditional craft hubs—all with completely different buyer profiles and long-term potential.

The best investment isn't necessarily the cheapest property. It's the one backed by strong fundamentals.

When we evaluate towns for our Premium Newsletter, we look beyond listing prices. We research questions like:

• Is the local economy supported by more than tourism?
• Are there infrastructure or redevelopment projects planned?
• Does the town have a unique identity that's difficult to replicate?
• Is there demand from residents as well as visitors?
• Are property values still accessible compared to similar destinations?

Those factors often matter far more over the long term than finding the lowest-priced house.

That's exactly why our newsletter focuses on under-the-radar towns instead of the places everyone is already talking about. By the time a destination becomes popular with international buyers, much of the opportunity has already been priced in.

Every month, we research overlooked communities across Japan and break down their lifestyle, property market, strengths, challenges, and long-term outlook, giving subscribers access to insights that can take dozens of hours to gather independently.

This Aichi snapshot is just one small part of a much larger picture.
