CRIMINOLOGICAL RESEARCH: KNOWLEDGE FOR PREVENTION
Criminology is not limited to studying crime after it occurs. Its broader purpose is to understand why criminal behaviour develops, which social and individual factors increase vulnerability, and how institutions and communities can intervene before harm takes place.
Research in criminology examines crime patterns, victimisation, social exclusion, violence, organised crime, emerging threats and the effectiveness of prevention policies. Reliable evidence helps distinguish perception from reality and supports responses based on knowledge rather than assumptions.
Criminological studies also contribute to civic education. An informed society is better prepared to recognise risks, reject violence and discrimination, protect vulnerable people and cooperate responsibly with institutions.
Effective prevention requires more than control and punishment. It requires research, education, early intervention and coordinated action among universities, professionals, public institutions and civil society.
Investing in criminological knowledge means strengthening public awareness, improving prevention strategies and contributing to safer, more resilient communities.
Understanding crime is the first step towards preventing it.
