Attention all Landlords: under the Renters’ Rights Act 2025 (implemented 1 May 2026), failure to serve the official Information Sheet to existing tenants by 31 May 2026 is a breach of statutory duty, resulting in potential civil penalties of up to £7,000 per tenancy.

Deadline: The official Renters' Rights Act Information Sheet 2026 must be served to existing tenants by 31 May 2026.

Service Method: The document must be served as a PDF attachment via email/text, or as a hard copy. Simply emailing or texting a link to the document is not valid.

Initial Fines: Local authorities can impose civil penalties starting around £4,000, rising to a maximum of £7,000 for a first offence.

Increased Penalties: Failure to comply within 28 days of a penalty can lead to a second, more severe offence with fines up to £40,000 or criminal prosecution.

Liability: Fines are per-tenancy. If a landlord owns multiple properties and fails to serve the sheet, the penalties can add up quickly.

If the deadline of 31 May 2026 is missed, the landlord or agent should rectify this immediately. While the new rules come into force on 1 May 2026, the information sheet can be served anytime between 20 March 2026 and 31 May 2026.
