This week, our Totnes and Kingsbridge teams enjoyed a fantastic day together, taking some time to connect outside the office for our Development Day.

We started with a scenic ferry trip from Kingsbridge to Salcombe, where we explored the town, enjoyed coffee and ice cream, browsed the local shops, and made the most of the beautiful sunshine and stunning coastal views.

After returning to Kingsbridge by ferry, we gathered at our new Kingsbridge office for lunch. Our Managing Partner, Fiona Hughes, gave an inspiring speech, followed by a fun team quiz that brought out everyone's competitive spirit!

To round off a brilliant day, we headed down to the Kingsbridge Fair to enjoy the atmosphere, support our local community and celebrate together.

Days like these are a great reminder of the importance of teamwork, taking time to connect and celebrating the people who make our firm what it is.

On the 20th of June Julie Tedder one of our Licensed Conveyancers took part in the Rowcroft Sleep Walk 2026! Julie took on an eight-mile coastal route (around 15,000 steps!) through Torquay and Paignton with hundreds of fellow Sleep Walkers – all while raising vital funds for the Rowcroft Hospice. Julie herself managed to raise £175 for the Hospice!

Rowcroft Hospice supports adults living with life-limiting illnesses in South Devon. They are a charity and the vast majority of there funding comes from the incredible generosity of the local community. From offering advice and emotional support, to specialist end of life palliative care, Rowcroft Hospice is there to help.

On the 20th June,Dee Willcocks who is head of our private client department took part in the Children’s Hospice South West Rainbow Rain. Dee took part in a 5k where you can run, skip, walk or jog with family, friends or work colleagues.

The Children's Hospice South West provides hospice care for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions and their whole family across the South West. They operate 3 hospices; Little Bridge House in North Devon, Charlton Farm in North Somerset and Little Harbour in Cornwall. Each hospice is located in a tranquil setting with quiet reflective spaces, sensory gardens and specialist play equipment. The majority of the families will receive support from CHSW for up to 10 years.

We are moving our Kingsbridge office on Thursday the 2nd of July to 65–67, Fore Street, Kingsbridge, Devon, TQ7 1PG.

The Kingsbridge office will be closed to the public on Thursday the 2nd of July until Monday the 6th when we will welcome visitors to our new office space.

All calls will be transferred to Totnes and will be answered there until the Reception is up and running in Kingsbridge.

1. How long will the divorce take?
This differs from case to case. From receipt of instructions to the date when you could apply for the Final Order of Divorce will be no less than six months and realistically, closer to eight months, if not longer. After the Court processes your application, there is a mandatory 20-week period before you can apply for the Conditional Order of Divorce, which does not end the marriage. During this time, parties are obliged to consider other matters arising from the breakdown in the marriage, such as finances and arrangements for the children. Very often, an application for the Final Order of Divorce will have to be delayed beyond six weeks and a day after the Conditional Order due to ongoing financial negotiations. It is unwise to apply for the Final Order until a Financial Order has been obtained and if there is to be an element of pension sharing, you should wait a further28 days after the date of the Financial Order before applying.

2. Will everything be split 50/50?
Equalising is always the starting point for financial negotiations unless the marriage has been very short. Any departure from equal would need to be justified, so that the outcome achieved is fair and meets the parties’ respective needs. The question of what is, and what is not a matrimonial asset will often preface the negotiations, and full disclosure of all assets is important to ensure that however they are divided, each party is fully aware of the net effect of the proposed terms. Only then, can fairness be measured.
