September is the official "back to business" month. With the kids back in school and the summer holiday lull behind us, now is a great time to get your personal and business finances in order before the end-of-year rush.
Here is your autumn financial checklist to finish the year strong:

* Audit summer spending: Review August statements to clean up holiday costs, cancel unused seasonal subscriptions, and reset your standard monthly budget.

* Review YTD income: Assess your net profit to date so you can estimate tax liabilities early and avoid unexpected surprises.

* Time major expenses: Plan necessary business purchases, software upgrades, or pension contributions now to optimise tax relief before year-end.

* Organise records: Clear out the receipt backlog and log missing invoices while the numbers are still fresh.

Get ahead of the Q4 rush today so you can focus on growing your business tomorrow.

With the HMRC ISA changes taking effect on 6 April 2027, now is a good time to keep these upcoming rules on your radar as you manage your money:

Cash ISA allowance cap: The annual tax-free Cash ISA limit for under-65s will drop from £20,000 to £12,000 (though the overall £20,000 total ISA allowance remains unchanged).

Uninvested cash tax charge: A flat 22% tax charge will apply to interest earned on uninvested cash held within Stocks & Shares ISAs.

Transfer limits: One-way restriction - transfers from Stocks & Shares ISAs back into Cash ISAs will no longer be permitted for under-65s.

The Great British Summer Savings Scheme end soon!

As a reminder, the temporary 5% reduced VAT rate applies up to and including 1 September 2026. Businesses will revert to the standard 20% VAT rate at midnight on 2 September 2026.

Here is a quick checklist to ensure a seamless transition for your systems:

* Update POS & Software: Schedule your accounting software, tills, and invoicing systems to switch back to 20% starting 2 September.

* Review Price Lists: Double-check menu prices, tags, and online ticketing listings to prevent billing errors on or after 2 September.

* Audit Contracts & Advance Bookings: Ensure supplies, services, or events taking place after 1 September have the standard rate correctly applied.

When it comes to move home, timing is everything.

When you find the right property, the instinct is to get your offer in straight away. But should you appoint a conveyancing solicitor before making that offer?

While it’s not a legal requirement to have a conveyancer instructed the moment you submit an expression of interest, having your legal team in place early gives you a distinct advantage:

* Sellers take you seriously: Estate agents and vendors view buyers with solicitors already instructed as ready to act.

* Faster key checks: Your conveyancer can begin identity checks and source-of-funds verification immediately, preventing delays once an offer is accepted.

* Smoother transaction: You avoid the last-minute scramble to find legal representation under pressure.

Wondering when to instruct your legal team to ensure a seamless purchase? Read our blog post to discover how early legal preparation protects your investment and keeps your property purchase moving smoothly:
