"I Have a Skilled Worker Visa, Which Visas Count Towards ILR? Which of them can I combine for 5 years residency?"

I receive this question very often. If you are on a Skilled Worker visa and planning for ILR, understanding what counts towards your 5 years is crucial.

You can combine Skilled Worker time with time on several other work visas but not all.

Here's what counts:
Any combination of these visas can be added together toward your 5-year ILR requirement:
Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, or Tier 2 (General)
Scale-up Worker
Tier 2 Minister of Religion
Tier 2 Sportsperson or International Sportsperson
Innovator Founder
Global Talent
Representative of an Overseas Business
Most Tier 1 visas (except Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur)

What to do:
Calculate your qualifying time carefully, don't assume
Plan your visa switches strategically
Track your days outside the UK
Get professional advice before switching routes, one wrong move can reset your clock

UK employers with sponsor licences:
Do you know when your Certificates of Sponsorship expire?

- Defined CoS (overseas workers):
Must be assigned within 3 months of Home Office approval

- Undefined CoS (UK-based workers):
Expire at the end of your CoS year (no carryover!)

- Assigned CoS (any worker):
Worker has 3 months to apply for their visa

Missing any of these deadlines means delays and extra costs.

Planning your CoS requests around these timelines is essential for smooth recruitment and compliance.
