Most overseas businesses planning a UK market entry ask the wrong first question: "Who do we hire locally?"
The right first question is often: "Who do we send?"

The UK Expansion Worker Visa (part of the Global Business Mobility route) exists precisely for this β€” it lets an established overseas business send a senior manager or specialist employee to set up its UK branch or subsidiary, before any local hiring even starts.

What it takes:
- Your business holds (or applies for) a UK Expansion Worker Sponsor Licence
- The individual has 12+ months' prior employment with you (waived in specific cases)
- The role sits on the eligible occupations list at Β£52,500+/year or the going rate
- Up to 2 years total, with a defined route to switch once you are trading

It does not lead directly to settlement β€” that is a deliberate design feature, not a drawback. It's built for the setup phase, not permanent relocation.

We work with businesses entering the UK from the US, Canada, Europe and the Middle East on exactly this route.

Expanding your business into the UK?

If your company does not have a trading presence in the UK yet, the UK Expansion Worker Visa lets you send a senior manager or specialist employee to set it up β€” no need to hire locally first.

What you need:
A UK Expansion Worker Sponsor Licence for your business
A genuine senior manager or specialist role, RQF/graduate-level
A salary of at least Β£52,500/year (or the going rate for the role)

At least 12 months' prior employment with your company (waived for high earners, and for Japanese or Australian nationals on their respective expansion assignments)

Thinking about applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)?

The two things most people get wrong are their qualifying date and their time spent outside the UK. On most routes, more than 180 days abroad in any rolling 12-month period can cost you your application β€” and the Home Office fee is not refunded if you are refused.

Our free ILR calculator checks both in a couple of minutes. Enter your visa start date and your absences, and it tells you when you are likely to qualify and whether you are within the limits.

Planning your UK settlement? Check your dates before you do anything else. πŸ“…

The number one reason ILR applications get refused is not missing documents β€” it is absences. The 180-day rule is checked on a rolling 12-month basis, not as a five-year total, and many families only discover a breach after the refusal letter arrives.

Our free ILR Calculator checks your position in under a minute:

βœ… Are your absences within the 180-day rolling limit?
βœ… What's the earliest date you can apply? (Up to 28 days early β€” but not one day more)
βœ… Works for Skilled Worker, Spouse/Partner and 10-Year Long Residence routes

It is free, and there is no signup needed to run it: https://conroybaker.com/free-uk-ilr-calculator-settlement-eligibility/

If the calculator raises a red flag β€” visa switches, near-maximum absences β€” our IAA-regulated advisers can review your full travel history before you apply. Far cheaper than a refusal.

Thinking about hiring from overseas, expanding your company into the UK, or launching a British business? πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

The route you choose matters more than the application itself. Pick wrong, and a refusal stays on your record β€” complicating every application that follows.

Our new plain-English guide covers the three main UK business immigration routes:

βœ… Sponsor Licence β€” for UK employers hiring international talent
βœ… Expansion Worker visa β€” for overseas businesses opening their first UK branch
βœ… Innovator Founder visa β€” for entrepreneurs, with settlement possible in 3 years ⚠

Plus: what UKVI actually assesses, real client outcomes, and the 5 pitfalls behind most refusals.

Hiring from overseas? Before your new hire can even apply for their visa, you must assign them a Certificate of Sponsorship and picking the wrong type (defined vs undefined) is the most common error we fix.

Our new 2026 guide for employers covers the types, the fees, the timescales, and the five mistakes that stall recruitment.

Can UKVI really turn up at your business unannounced? Yes β€” and it is an established part of how Sponsor Licences are policed.

That is why Sponsor Licence compliance cannot be something you prepare when a visit is announced. It has to be continuous: complete records for every sponsored worker, monitoring that keeps up with hybrid working, reports made on time, and right-to-work checks done properly on everyone.

The good news: the sponsors who pass visits are not the biggest ones. They are the ones where a named person owns a simple compliance calendar and one complete file per worker. Process beats size.

Our full guide covers the four duties, what triggers a visit, and the five-question test of whether your files would survive one: https://conroybaker.com/uk-sponsor-licence/uk-sponsor-licence-compliances/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=compliance_page

Holding a UK sponsor licence is the easy part. Keeping it is where employers slip.

The Sponsor Management System (SMS) is the Home Office portal where every licensed sponsor manages its licence, assigns Certificates of Sponsorship, and reports changes about workers and the business. It is also the record UKVI checks when deciding whether your business is meeting its duties.

The most common failures we see are not dramatic. A single Level 1 User who has left the company. An address change nobody reported. A CoS with the wrong salary on it. Ordinary process gaps β€” with licence-threatening consequences.

Our new employer's guide covers who needs SMS access, what must be reported, the mistakes that trigger enforcement, and a five-step setup checklist for new sponsors.

"We thought our application was ready to go. It was not."

A London employer came to us three weeks before submitting their own sponsor licence application. What we found missing documents, a salary shortfall, HR gaps would likely have caused a refusal.

We fixed it. It was approved first time.

Thinking about sponsoring overseas talent for your business? Send us a message we are happy to check your application before you submit.
