What underpins citizens' trust in justice in the European Union?
According to Alberto de Gregorio Merino, Director-General of the European Commission Legal Service (European Commission), trust in the EU is built on the independence and efficiency of its judiciary. An independent and efficient judiciary not only safeguards the rights of citizens but also helps ensure that EU law is applied consistently across all Member States. The European Commission Legal Service contributes to this mission by safeguarding the legality of Commission action, advising on compliance with EU law, and representing the Commission before the Union courts.
Through these functions, it supports legal certainty, the consistent application of EU law, and the Rule of Law across the European Union. Maintaining citizens' confidence in justice requires strong institutions, well-trained justice practitioners, and a shared commitment to upholding the principles on which the EU is founded.
Judicial training and continuous professional development play an important role in equipping judges, prosecutors, and court staff with the knowledge and skills needed to fulfil this responsibility.
