You've got two mirrors and one job. Check your blind spots. Twice.

Five tips, zero fluff. Save this one, send it to your dispatcher, and tape it to the dashboard.

🚛 Know your blind spots. Check twice before you change lanes or turn. That car you can't see has somewhere to be too.

⏱️ Watch your speed. Traffic, curves and bad weather don't care that you're running late. Neither does the officer. You're not Mad Max, and this isn't Fury Road.

📏 Keep your distance. Big rigs don't stop on a dime. Leave the gap, even when the car behind is giving you attitude. Let them have it.

😴 Stay alert. Fatigue is just as dangerous as distraction. Since 1 August 2026 you also have a duty not to drive if you're unfit for any reason. Tired? Take the break. Who's going to pull over for you if you don't?

⚖️ Protect your rights. Know your responsibilities and know your rights. When something goes wrong, proper legal guidance matters, and it matters early.

Real talk: none of this is complicated. It's the stuff people skip when they're tired, late or sure it'll be fine. Don't be that driver.

They can ask for it. Handing it over is the easy part. What happens next is where it gets spicy.

📋 NHVR or police officer says "work diary, please"? You hand it over. This is not the moment for a TED Talk.

📄 They can copy it. And in some circumstances, they can take it as evidence. Your little book of hours just became Exhibit A. Hope the handwriting's good.

🛑 Can't find it? Mate, that's a problem before they've turned a single page. Carrying it is the law, not a suggestion. It does not live in the shed.

⚖️ But you've got rights too. An officer asking for more than they're allowed to? That can be challenged. And every word you say and every page you hand over can come back to haunt you. The roadside is not a confessional. Give them what the law requires, keep it short, and make notes like you're writing your own movie script.

"Routine" is what they call it right up until it isn't.

Ever seen Smokey and the Bandit? The cops there didn't just look at the truck. They looked at everything. Same energy.

🔍 That roadside stop isn't one check. Mass. Dimensions. Load restraint. Work diary. The rig itself. All in one go. Surprise.

👀 And they're looking at you too. Since 1 August 2026, you've got a duty not to drive if you're unfit, full stop. Fatigue is no longer the only box. Turn up sweating, anxious and looking unwell? That officer is going to look a lot closer. Funny how that works.

📋 Then there's the diary, where small things turn big. A 15-minute slip can become a fatigue breach, or a false or misleading entry charge (and that penalty just went up). Fifteen minutes. That's it.

🏢 One bad stop is a driver problem. A pattern of them is a company problem. Does your boss know that?

Everyone assumed someone else checked. That's how everyone ends up in trouble.

Under the HVNL, every party in the chain 🔗 has a duty. Driver, loader, operator, consignor, consignee. Nobody gets a hall pass.

🚫 "I thought the loader did it." "I thought the driver checked." Cute. Not a defence. Your duty is yours and you can't hand it off.

🗣️ The chain usually breaks at the handover, where everyone's talking and nobody's confirming. If you can't show who checked what, you can't show you took reasonable steps.

🏢 And the buck doesn't stop at the driver. Operators, consignors and executives can be in the frame too.

🚛 Real talk: know your duty and be able to prove what you did about it.

𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗮 𝗡𝗦𝗪 𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻? Sometimes. And that "sometimes" is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

🚦 There are different reasons a licence gets suspended, and each one plays by its own rules. Some you can appeal. Some you can't. Some have deadlines tighter than your delivery window. Some want evidence, not excuses.

🎲 Two drivers can both be "suspended" and be in totally different situations. Same word, different mess.

⏰ And that notice isn't a fine w**e. Leave it in the glovebox and it only gets worse.

🚛 Real talk: if your licence pays your bills, protect it. The best appeal is the one you never have to lodge.

A 15-minute gap is all it takes to turn a clean diary into a fatigue breach. Even a minor one goes on the record.

📋 Then the diary doesn't match what really happened. Now it isn't a breach, it's a charge of making a false or misleading entry. Fifteen minutes just got a lot more expensive.

🚛 Let it become a habit and it's no longer just the driver in the firing line. Operators with a pattern of discrepancies get investigated.

⚠️ One roadside inspection. One small gap. Your licence, your fleet and your livelihood on the table.

We’ll go first: bad weather. Rain has never sat on 90 in the overtaking lane, then sped up as soon as the passing lane appeared. 🌧️😏
