Trust Me, I’m an Algorithm? AI Claims Handling and Regulatory Scrutiny

AI and automation promise faster, more efficient claims handling - but with greater automation comes greater scrutiny.

As ASIC, AFCA and the incoming GICOP 2026 regime raise expectations around accountability and automated decision-making, insurers face a critical question: can you automate claims handling and still demonstrate you are meeting your obligations?

Join Leah Watt, Tetiana George (梅玉瑛)and chair Ashleigh Allen as they explore the evolving regulatory landscape, the risks and responsibilities of AI-driven claims handling, and what insurers need to consider as automation becomes an increasingly important part of the claims process.

SPOTLIGHT | 2026 AILA NATIONAL CONFERENCE 'DECANTING RISK' + EARLY BIRD EXTENDED TO FRIDAY 4 SEPT

▶️ From “Mission Impossible AI” to MiAi ◀️

When barrister Laina Chan attended the AILA National Conference in Melbourne last year, she was launching an idea so ambitious her husband had dubbed it “Mission Impossible AI”.

Twelve months later, that idea has become MiAI Law – a legal AI platform that has partnered with Microsoft, achieved ISO/IEC 27001 certification and is attracting growing interest from across the legal profession and judiciary.

Ahead of MiAi returning as Platinum Sponsor of the 2026 AILA National Conference – Decanting Risk, we spoke with Laina about the journey, the future of AI-enabled legal practice and why, after almost three decades with AILA, the annual conference remains an important part of her professional community.

Read the full story below and discover how “Mission Impossible AI” became a reality.

What makes great people stay?
And how do we build workplaces and career pathways that will keep pace with a changing industry?
