Laws You Didn't Know Existed!

🏛️ In Tasmania, it is a criminal offence to falsely claim to be an architect.

Section 19, Architects Act 1929 (TAS). Still in force. Right now.
Now, to be fair — this makes complete sense. Pretending to be a qualified architect and then designing structures people are going to live or work in is genuinely dangerous.

What we enjoy about this law is the specificity. Not a doctor. Not a lawyer. Not an engineer.

Tasmania looked at the professions and said: architects. That's the one we're putting in the criminal legislation. 🤷

Important update for SMSF trustees — new rules are now in effect.

From today, 10 August 2026, self-managed superannuation funds can no longer borrow to purchase residential property through a Limited Recourse Borrowing Arrangement (LRBA).

This is one of the most significant changes to SMSF property investment in more than a decade. Here's what you need to know:

✅ Existing residential LRBAs entered before today are grandfathered — you are not required to sell
✅ SMSFs can still purchase residential property outright without borrowing
✅ Borrowing for business real property remains available, subject to strict conditions
❌ New LRBAs to purchase residential property are no longer permitted

Laws You Didn't Know Existed!

🎵 In Victoria, it is illegal to sing an obscene song or ballad in a public place.

Section 4, Summary Offences Act 1966 (VIC).
Maximum fine: $777.30.

This is the same section as the kite law. One section of Victorian legislation somehow covers both annoying kite flying AND public ballad content standards.

We have so many questions about the parliamentary debate that produced this combination.
What counts as obscene? The legislation does not elaborate. What counts as a ballad? Again, silent.

The $777.30 fine, however, is very specific. Victoria clearly thought hard about the ballad situation and landed on $777.30 as the appropriate societal response. 🎶

Bathurst's courthouse has been a landmark on Russell Street for nearly 150 years. 🏛️

Officially opened on 16 July 1880, the building was designed by colonial architect James Barnet and took around three years to construct. It's a fine example of Victorian-era public architecture — and it's been recognised on the NSW State Heritage Register since 1999.

History like this is all around us in Bathurst. We're proud to call this city home.

🏍️ New Rules for Learner & Provisional Riders in NSW

If you're learning to ride or on your P's, here's what you need to know about your safety gear:

✅ Approved hi-vis vest/jacket (Learners)
✅ Approved protective gloves (L's & P's)

Hi-vis needs to meet AS/NZS 4602.1:2011, AS 4602.1:2024, or ISO 20471:2013. Gloves need to meet EN 13594:2015.

New anti-money laundering rules are coming for law firms — here's what it means for you.

Laws You Didn't Know Existed.

In Victoria, flying a kite in a public place is illegal — if it annoys someone.

Maximum fine: $777.30.
Section 4, Summary Offences Act 1966 (VIC).

We want to be clear: the $777.30 is not a round number. Someone sat down, did the math, and landed on $777.30 as the appropriate price for airborne public nuisance.

We also want to be clear that "annoyance" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in this law. One person's joyful Sunday afternoon is apparently another person's $777.30 grudge waiting to happen.
