Greetings from a wonderfully wet and wintry Central West. This week our family welcomed a tiny baby girl into our lives. We are all so excited and pleased now that she has arrived safely and so relieved that she and her mum are both well. My son is besotted with this little miracle baby. I can’t wait to meet her in a few days time.

My clients often navigate life's stormy waters, but with each passing day, their challenges fade, and they're empowered to rediscover peace and forge ahead with renewed purpose. It was a much appreciated delight to receive these gorgeous thank you flowers.

Stronger protections against image-based abuse

A person can now go to prison for up to 3 years if they use AI to make sexually explicit deepfake images or videos of someone.

The same punishment now also applies to anyone who shares – or even threatens to share – those images or videos.

Creating or sharing sexually explicit sound recordings of someone without their consent, even if the audio is fake, is a crime now too.

These new laws, which expand on existing protections, are designed to stop AI and deepfake technology from being used to embarrass, control and hurt people.

Vale Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO, the finest pediatric doctor and Professor of Medicine, a musician, and the kindest and most generous of women, and the first female Governor of NSW. Without her backing, I would not have secured the imprimatur of the NSW Government for Macquarie 2010.

On Saturday, I had the great privilege of hearing this extraordinary woman speak at the Orange Order of Australia Association's lunch at Duntrey League. Her speech was the most moving and compelling I have ever heard.

Martha amongst other things is the co-founder, Homicide Victims Support Group. Did you know that 75% of the homicide committed in NSW each year result from Domestic Violence?

Martha Jabour OAM helped establish the Homicide Victims Support Group in 1993 to care for families and friends of homicide victims throughout NSW. It provides life-changing counselling, support and referrals to more than 4,200 members.

Using her experience across grief, trauma, policy development, strategic planning and crisis management, in 2013, Martha developed a vision for a world-first trauma recovery facility for those impacted by homicide. She inspired politicians, public servants, community organisations and others to raise funds, while land for the facility was donated by Blacktown City Council and the Western Sydney Parklands Trust. Grace’s Place opened in 2023.

In April 2024, Grace’s Place provided care for the overseas families of the victims of a Sydney shopping centre attack, including accommodation, counselling and funeral assistance.

Martha is also a community member representative on the NSW State Parole Authority, representing the families of homicide victims once an inmate becomes eligible for parole.

Google Grace's Place the incredible facility at Doonside Martha obtained Federal, State and voluntary funding for. Grace's Place is named after Grace Lynch, Anita Cobby's mother. For those of you who recall that heinous crime in the mid 80s, you will also recall the decency and diligence of Anita's parents and their going on the assist others who had suffered the effects of brutal crimes.

Bring Peace to a Child’s World

Children want peace in their world, they want their parents to get along, they don’t want to make decisions or get caught up in having to support one parent in their battles with the other.

Children have a right to be children and enjoy their childhood. It is the foundation of their life; disruptions to this foundation will have a profound impact on the rest of their life.

Destroyers, today is Day #11 of of Activism against Violence against Women.
Today, for the fifth time during those 11 days, we bring you news of a woman dead by violence.
We continue to call on all Australian governments to to prioritise a national, unified system for investigation, analysis and response to violence against women. We continue to demand a safer world for women and their children.
With great sadness we persist in our task of maintaining the most credible and substantiated record of women killed by violence in Australia. Our report today lacks detail; again we commit to updating our post and our register as further news emerges.
Once more we update our register of known deaths due to violence against women in 2024, which now stands at 72.

Just after 8pm on Friday November 29th police were called to a property in Footscray for a welfare check. When they arrived they found a woman (62), who remains unnamed for legal reasons, dead inside a brothel premises. Investigators allege the victim was killed in the early hours of the morning of Wednesday, 27 November. Yesterday Michael Chalmers (35) was arrested at his home address in Footscray and has now been charged with one count of murder. Nothing further has been reported to date.

We extend our deepest sympathy to family and friends.

This violent death is listed at number 68 in our chronological register for 2024.

Destroyers, these posts honour the memory of women who have died in tragic circumstances. We do moderate closely and off topic comments will be hidden. Off topic comments include: speculation as to motivation, actions, background, mental state and drug or alcohol use of the alleged perpetrator; calls for violent retribution; offensive remarks to other posters; and any comment which may impact on court proceedings.

We are currently monitoring several deaths, some of which date back over months and years. We try to be accurate in our record, and we will not publish without a high degree of certainty, but we can't know the full circumstances of each death until court cases or coronial hearings are finalised. We do our best to maintain a full and accurate register, based on our recording criteria. If you know of any verified facts which may add detail to our record, please send us a **personal message**.

We have no wish to prejudice the outcome of court proceedings.

Women from all backgrounds are counted but we make no assumptions about a woman's culture, lifestyle or circumstances. We often do not even know a name: this may be out of respect for cultural traditions or because of a court order. We add updated information to our annual registers as soon as it is received and verified.

*Please note:* In at least 75 per cent of the cases reported from 2012 to 2023, the victim knew her alleged killer. We do not record only deaths attributed as domestic or family violence, as we believe all violent deaths targeted against women are the result of societal misogyny. We include women killed by other women (lateral violence). Their small but sad number confirms that most violence against women is perpetrated by men.

Su***de is the leading cause of death for Australians between the ages of 15 and 49, with about 8 Australians taking their lives every day – and 75% of them are male. It works out at 45 men a week – fathers, sons, brothers – who die of su***de.

It’s not something restricted to younger men, either – in fact, men aged over 85 have the highest age-specific rate of su***de.

While the trend was down over the course of the last century, it has increased in recent years. In NSW alone, male su***des (suspected and confirmed) have climbed from 661 in 2020 to 732 in 2023.

We subscribe to and observe the Best Practice Guidelines for Lawyers Doing Family Work as promulgated by the Family Law Council and the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia. Please note that many of the principles enunciated are now captured in the Family Court’s Central Practice Direction.

3.5 states:

Lawyers should treat clients suffering emotional distress in a similar manner to clients suffering physical distress or illness, namely they should assist those clients to obtain support and professional help through referral to General Practitioners, counsellors, social workers and psychologists.

The Law Council of Australia is a Commonwealth of Australia Statutory Authority established under Section 115 of the Family Law Act 1975 to advise and make recommendations to the Attorney-General, is one of our premier institutions and is comprised of the leading family lawyers in Australia. Its Best Practice Guidelines, specifically state they represent the law.

The Family Court exhorts we lawyers and clients to take mental health very seriously: https://www.fcfcoa.gov.au/fl/pubs/separation-stress https://www.fcfcoa.gov.au/support-mental-health
