This week in our team insights series, Alex shares his view on the 2026 transactional landscape and where he sees the biggest opportunities emerging:

“South Africa’s transactional market is entering an exciting phase. Banking and finance, energy, infrastructure, and M&A are increasingly overlapping, and that is creating real opportunities, particularly in project finance, acquisition finance, and cross-border investment.

What stands out to me is the move beyond traditional lending into infrastructure finance, sustainable finance, and private credit. Lawyers who can combine strong technical ability with commercial insight and cross-border experience will be best placed to add value. South Africa remains a key gateway for Africa-Europe investment.”

When assets are being restructured, moved, or transferred to a new structure, the tax impact may be significant. Section 42 of the Income Tax Act can, in the right circumstances, make those changes more tax efficient.

We help clients understand what statutory framework applies, what the risks are, and how to structure these matters carefully so that the transaction supports the restructuring goal.

If Section 42 is relevant to your portfolio, speak to an expert at SL Law.

Q1 of 2026 has served as a clear reminder of a principle we hold firmly: in a legal environment of growing complexity, clarity is not a luxury, but a necessity.

Over the past quarter, South Africa’s legal and regulatory landscape has continued to evolve, from the implications of the 2026 Budget Speech to ongoing pressure points in property and commercial transactions. In such an environment, clients do not merely require advice. They require perspective, sound judgement, and the confidence that comes from steady, capable guidance.

At SL Law, we have remained focused on precisely that.

During the first quarter, our teams have:
- advised clients on the implications of the 2026 Budget Speech for tax planning, structuring, and future transactions;
- continued the rollout of DealSight, our conveyancing supervision service designed to bring greater visibility, reassurance, and calm to the property process;
- invested in future legal talent through our participation in the Stellenbosch University Faculty of Law Career Day; and
- continued to support clients across corporate and commercial, real estate, tax, and dispute resolution matters.

What unites this work is a simple conviction: legal expertise should never add to complexity. It should bring order to it. It should help clients move forward with confidence, with clarity, and with trust in the process.

That remains our focus for the year ahead.

Across firms and in-house teams, AI is already assisting with parts of the production of legal work like document review, drafting, and research, while lawyers remain fully accountable for the advice, judgment, and outcomes that follow.

The opportunity isn’t to replace lawyers, but to redefine where legal expertise creates value, in judgment, strategy, and accountability.

Human Rights Day reminds us that rights are not abstract ideals, but practical protections that shape everyday life.

They safeguard not only access to housing, education, and public services, but also the fundamental freedoms that allow individuals to make their own choices and determine their own path.

From fair treatment in the workplace to the ability to live with dignity and autonomy, the Constitution is intended to be lived and relied upon - not simply read.

At SL Law, we remain committed to upholding these principles in the work we do and the advice we give.

Year end with the Best!

Well that was fun! But so was the year! So much packed in, so much accomplished and achieved, and the very reason we were able to really let our hair down and give a cheers to the year that was!

Like fine wine, we’ve matured, we’ve grown, we’ve toiled the soil, ripened with possibility and packaged for client perfection! Thank you to for the perfect setting and venue for this years year-end celebration and landing!

The food was exceptional, and the company — friends and affiliates of those who have partnered with, believed in and shaped the brand of what it is today.

Cheers SL Law, cheers Team, cheers 2025, and cheers to 2026 that awaits us all!

From the Partners, Stefan Le Roux and Phillip Sampson, the Executive Team and Associates, we wish you a similarly incredible year, and festive season!
