A veteran and his spouse came into our legal advice clinic in May 2026. Their 12 year-old niece had been living with them since her mother had passed away. They needed a court order to establish legal custody to their niece so that they could continue to be her caregiver. Attorney John Palmer of Naman Howell Smith & Lee, PLLC took the case on a pro bono basis. He filed suit and obtained the custody order in August. We are blessed to have lawyers like John Palmer, who stand up for our veterans when they are in need!

A Vietnam era Navy veteran and his wife came to our legal advice clinic for help in February 2024. They had been sued for a deficiency debt after their vehicle was repossessed and sold at auction. The debt collectors used aggressive and potentially illegal tactics to collect the debt. Jhoanny Gonzalez, a law student at the time who now practices law for Kimbrough Legal LLC, gave the supervising attorney a prophetic assessment after interviewing the couple: “file an answer and counterpetition - maybe demanding a jury trial will stop them.” Two years later, that is exactly how things ended, with the couple walking away owing nothing. Thanks to dedicated law students and volunteer lawyers like Jhoanny Gonzalez, who help us advocate effectively for veterans!
