Michigan legislation is currently pending that could make it the 30th constitutional carry state.

If passed, the bill package in Lansing would eliminate the CPL requirement.

This is massive news for anyone with a past record.

Carry eligibility would align directly with possession eligibility, bypassing the separate CPL system and its own distinct felony bars.

But this has not passed yet, and nothing is guaranteed.

Until the law changes, current Michigan CPL rules remain strictly enforced.

Most people assume any record of counseling or diagnosis strips their Second Amendment rights.

That is completely false.

Federal law does not treat medical care as a disqualifier.

Here is what does and does not trigger a federal ban under 18 U.S.C. 922(g)(4):

• Seeing a therapist does not ban you.
• A medical diagnosis from a doctor does not ban you.
• Voluntary inpatient treatment does not ban you.

Federal law requires a formal legal process: either an involuntary commitment ordered by a lawful authority, or formal adjudication by a court or board.
