A courtroom sentencing turned chaotic in Maricopa County when a grieving father lunged at and punched his son-in-law’s convicted killer.

While anyone watching can understand the overwhelming grief and rage behind the moment, the law treats courtroom violence strictly. Because the convicted murderer was physically restrained in court, this incident elevated the father's potential exposure from a standard misdemeanor assault to an aggravated felony.

Beyond state prison time, an aggravated felony conviction carries severe collateral consequences for lawful permanent residents—including the real risk of deportation.

I joined azfamily 3TV CBS 5 with reporter Alexis Dominguez to provide legal analysis on the case, prosecutorial discretion, and the intersection between state criminal charges and federal immigration consequences.

A high-profile sentencing hearing in Maricopa County took a dramatic turn this week when a victim's family member attacked the defendant right in the courtroom.

I sat down with azfamily 3TV CBS 5 reporter Alexis Dominguez to break down what this means legally—from the new criminal charges filed to how judges must navigate uncontrollable grief versus courtroom safety.

Tune in to Arizona’s Family (3TV / CBS 5) tonight at 5:00 PM to watch the full report and my interview!

An innocent bystander is attacked outside his own home by a police K-9 that completely ignored the fleeing suspect. The victim accumulates over $110,000 in medical bills and faces devastating financial ruin.

Yet, the Arizona Supreme Court just threw his lawsuit out permanently—without a jury ever considering the merits or whether law enforcement was negligent.

Why? A clerical contradiction in the initial paperwork: the written text demanded "one hundred thousand dollars," while the numerals in parentheses said "($250,000)".

Under Arizona law (A.R.S. § 12-821.01), anyone making a claim against a public entity must state a single, definite "sum certain" within 180 days.

Because of that typo, the town claimed it couldn't tell what the settlement offer was, and our state's highest court ruled the claim fatally defective.

I joined azfamily 3TV CBS 5 reporter Alexis Dominguez to break down the ruling and explain why procedural strictness can completely bar recovery, regardless of how catastrophic the injuries are.

After seven days and nearly 40 hours of deliberations, a mistrial was declared in the Lindsay Clancy case when the jury deadlocked, reportedly over a single holdout.

A lot of viewers asked: Why couldn’t the judge just swap in an alternate juror and keep going?

I joined Arizona’s Family to explain why the law strictly prevents judges from doing that. A judge cannot remove a juror simply because they disagree with the rest of the panel or see reasonable doubt differently—dismissal requires proven misconduct or outside influence.

Check out the clip to see the legal breakdown of why the judge's hands were tied and what options the prosecution has moving forward.

I was on Arizona’s Family this morning discussing the latest developments in the Essa Williams trial following his guilty verdict for the shooting of Phoenix Police Officer Tyler Moldovan.

The case is now in the aggravation phase, where prosecutors present evidence to seek a harsher sentence, while the defense prepares mitigating factors for the court. Check out the segment below for a quick look at how the aggravation and sentencing phases work in Arizona courts:
