Wednesday Walk for Peace Update
Extensive coordination to warmly welcome the Walk For Peace monks continues across many of our regional jurisdictions and directly with the monks' support staff as well. Currently, the monks plan to enter Stafford County on Friday, February 6th. The timing of their arrival is subject to change, but will likely be late morning or midday, depending on their progress. The Walk For Peace will primarily progress through Stafford County along Route 1.
For those who are planning to watch the Walk for Peace as it passes through Stafford:
-Follow all instructions and guidance from law enforcement and event coordinators.
-Out of respect for the monks, please allow them to initiate any interaction.
-Always maintain a respectful distance.
-Do not walk behind or follow the monks for safety reasons.
-Supporters are asked to quietly line streets along the route.
-Stay out of roadways and avoid obstructing traffic.
Supporters are also reminded to avoid blocking any side streets, business entrances, and fire and rescue station entrances that may be along the route.
Information on donations directly from the monks' support team:
The monks have everything they need for their journey, including food, shoes, supplies and other necessities. They are not accepting material donations at this time.
Traffic Impacts:
Significant impacts to motor vehicle traffic are expected on Route 1 throughout the day on Friday, including potential closures. Motorists should prepare for heavy traffic and are encouraged to utilized other routes. School dismissal Friday afternoon may encounter delays due to increased traffic, especially schools near Route 1. Those picking up car riders should plan to allow for extra travel time and bus routes may be delayed for drop offs. Please be patient as the traffic impacts from the Walk of Peace are temporary.
We will continue to update confirmed information regarding the Walk for Peace as it comes available. Please understand this is all of the information that Stafford County currently has, and that plans are subject to change. Information is released as decisions are made by the monks based on their progress and well-being. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please do not call 911 or the Emergency Communications Center non-emergency line for information regarding the Walk for Peace coming through Stafford.
