Happy Thanksgiving, all!

On Election Day, I boarded an international flight on my way to Kathmandu, Nepal. I had signed up for a writing retreat with a friend rather spontaneously and frankly had done minimal advance research on my destination – leaving me with little idea of what to expect. I heard the election results s...

Are you a family law attorney who would like to offer clients a structured and efficient five-step divorce process using a supportive problem-solving approach? Collaborative Divorce Professional Toolbox offers training – as well as comprehensive forms, checklists, client worksheets and handouts – to support this non-litigated approach to divorce. An in-person two-day workshop is coming up in Seattle, December 1 and 2, and meets the basic collaborative law training requirements set by the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals. This training, and associated materials, has grown from more than a decade of evaluating what helps collaborative divorce cases work well, and developing the forms and materials to support a streamlined and predictable process. Noffsinger Family Law has committed to donating $150 for every collaborative case handled by Leigh in 2021 to a worthy cause supporting kids and families. This one was a no-brainer! And I so admire my friend Kim and her son Van for the connections they are making during their year abroad!

At the risk of sounding grinchy, I really don’t care for this time of year. Even in non-Covid “normal” years, my holidays these last 10 years never feel very normal. Usually at Thanksgiving my son is with his dad, and my step kids are with their mom. So, on that big-gathering-around-the-table ...

For 2020, I pledged that for every new collaborative divorce case, Noffsinger Family Law would donate $150 to a non-profit supporting families. Now in December it's the best kind of "shopping" - determining where to allocate those funds!

When I saw Madi's most recent request in my Facebook feed, I knew her organization, In-Sight Collaborative, should receive some of these funds. Madi grew up on Bainbridge Island and, although I don't know her well, I have long admired her open-heartedness and passion for doing this important work with refugees on the other side of our ailing world. We need more young people like Madi, willing not only to face so many deep systemic inequities, but to show up, DO something about it, and ask for the help she needs. Read her posts on Facebook and you'll see what I mean. She's the real thing and deserves all the support you can send her way.

Madi, thank you for all that you do! You are such an inspiration. Go in peace and love!

Although not divorce-related, here's my first blog post in a year...

The morning after Barack Obama’s victory in 2008, I cried with a friend in a coffee shop, elated and moved to tears by the election of our first Black president. Eight years later, I cried again in a yoga class packed with people shocked and stunned by Donald Trump’s election. I’m almost 50 ye...
