The founding partners of ADZ Law, LLP, Tülin Açıkalın, Jessica Dayton, and Lauren Zorfas share a common passion for pursuing justice for individuals and families facing difficult legal challenges. We have witnessed firsthand that access to legal representation equals access to justice. Together we bring our considerable legal experience, knowledge and training to zealously advocate for you. Our three pillars of practice – family law, civil litigation, and alternative dispute resolution - are trauma-informed with a fierce commitment to the integrity of the legal profession. In our family law and civil litigation practices, we are results-oriented, passionate advocates who aim to resolve cases efficiently, prioritizing our clients’ critical financial, family, and emotional needs. In our dispute resolution practice, we are consistent, impartial, and fair. Our commitment to diversity and cultural competency is reflected in our team and our ability to serve the unique needs of individuals who are LGBTQ+ and those who have limited English proficiency. We have the experience, skill, and determination to fearlessly pursue legal remedies on your behalf, and also the calm temperament necessary to resolve disputes through peaceful negotiation where possible. We believe in client autonomy and agency. As a result, our first step is to clearly explain options and possible outcomes so that you can choose your own path. Whether you have been a victim of a crime, are seeking safety, dissolving a relationship, or tackling post-separation parenting issues, the civil and criminal legal systems are complex and can be daunting. Fear should not deter you from pursuing your legal options. You deserve attorneys who will take the time to listen to your concerns and who will empower, support, and fight for you. Our commitment to social justice and service is the cornerstone of our professional lives. We have spent over forty years, collectively, in careers dedicated to social justice. We have provided advice and insight regarding the needs of families, children, and crime victims through our active participation on a variety of local and statewide boards, commissions, and advisory committees including California Partnership to End Domestic Violence, Community Legal Services of East Palo Alto, Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse, Family Violence Appellate Project, California Judicial Council’s Elkins Family Law Task Force, Family and Juvenile Law Advisory Committee to the Judicial Council, San Mateo County Domestic Violence Council, Legal Process Committee, Fatherhood Collaborative, and San Mateo County Blue Ribbon Commission on Foster Care. We also believe in mentoring and training and sharing our passion for service with the next generation of lawyers. We all actively mentor pro bono attorneys and legal interns and have each been invited to train at professional conferences throughout the country. ADZ Law, LLP represents clients throughout California. We invite you to contact ADZ Law, LLP to schedule a consultation to learn more about our practice areas, our team, and how we can help you.

𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗟 𝗦𝗨𝗖𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗦 - "𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗲."

Those were the first words our client said after every member of the jury confirmed their verdict.

Survivors of sexual violence are too often asked the wrong questions. 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘺? 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯'𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘨𝘰 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺? In sexual assault cases, these questions are routinely turned against survivors, as if staying in a relationship, trying to keep the peace, or delaying a report proves that nothing happened.

These are not signs that abuse didn't happen. They are trauma responses, and they are part of a pattern we see again and again in sexually violent relationships. Through expert testimony on the dynamics of sexual assault and domestic violence, and by showing the jury the full picture of what she endured, we helped the jury see past the attempts to shift blame onto her. California law requires only 9 of 12 jurors to agree in a civil case. This jury was unanimous. Every juror found that the defendant sexually battered her. The jury awarded $1.5 million in compensatory damages and $1.25 million in punitive damages.

Behind those numbers is something more important. A woman who was silenced for so long was finally heard, seen, and believed.

We are honored to have stood beside her, and in awe of her courage and tenacity.

To every survivor who has been told her story doesn't add up: your response to trauma is not evidence against you. Your voice matters.

A new school year can mean more than new classes and supplies, it can also mean adjusting your parenting schedule. In California, a custody order or parenting plan outlines each parent’s rights and responsibilities. If your current schedule no longer works with your child’s school routine, it may be time to discuss a modification.

Starting the school year with a clear plan can help reduce confusion and make the transition easier for everyone—especially your child.

In California, your spouse generally doesn’t have to agree to the divorce for you to move forward. California is a no-fault divorce state, meaning one spouse can seek a divorce even if the other spouse doesn’t want one.

If your spouse refuses to sign the paperwork or participate in the process, the divorce may still proceed. However, there are specific procedures and deadlines you’ll need to follow, and the process can take longer if your spouse doesn’t cooperate.
