About Us – Walkup Melodia Kelly & Schoenberger

Established in 1959

For over 50 years, our lawyers have represented individuals throughout California who suffered catastrophic injuries or lost loved ones. News and World Report rated Walkup a “National Top Tier” product liability firm and a “Metropolitan First-Tier” personal injury firm. More than 50% of our attorneys were peer-nominated as Northern California SuperLawyers (fewer than 5% of all lawyers in the state achieve this rating). In 2011, two of our lawyers were listed in the “Top 100” lawyers in the state, one in the “Top 50 Women Lawyers,” and one in the “Top 10.” In recent years, three of our attorneys were named SFTLA “Trial Lawyer of the Year.” Other titles given to our attorneys include “Consumer Attorney of the Year” (awarded by CAOC) and “Best Personal Injury Attorney” (awarded by the San Francisco Recorder). Our lawyers also hold “Best Lawyers in America” listings and Martindale-Hubbell “AV” ratings. Walkup attorneys hold teaching positions at local law schools including Hastings, Berkeley, and USF School of Law. They train other trial lawyers as part of NITA (National Institute for Trial Advocacy), ABOTA, the California Continuing Education of the Bar, and the Rutter Group. They have traveled to Belfast, Mexico, Kosovo, Macedonia, Japan, Britain, Scotland, and Eastern Europe to train lawyers in trial advocacy. They have served as board members, chairpersons, and presidents in leading organizations, including the San Francisco Bar Association, Consumer Attorneys of California, the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association, ABOTA, the International Society of Barristers, and the San Francisco Bar Association Judiciary Committee. In their spare time, Walkup attorneys give back to the community. They helped establish ABC (Attorneys Bettering the Community) a non-profit for lawyers who want to engage in hands-on service work. They take on pro bono cases; coach youth basketball, high school and law school mock trial teams; work with volunteer programs from the SF Bar Association; and work with the Rule of Law Initiative in developing countries. Our practice areas include the following:

Product liability
Medical malpractice
Motor vehicle accidents
Construction accidents
Aviation accidents
Premises liability
Dangerous highways
Nursing home abuse
Birth injuries
Burn injuries
Brain injuries
Spinal cord injuries

Walkup Shareholder Spencer Pahlke recently joined Brian Kabateck and Shant Karnikian on Off the Record, the Daily Journal Network podcast, to talk about Berkeley Law’s Flash Trial Competition, a fast-paced exercise that challenges law students to take a case from an unfamiliar file to an opening statement in less than an hour.

On this week’s Cause of Action podcast, Walkup’s Spencer Pahlke is joined by Deepak Gupta.

One crucial thing that often gets left out of conversations about legal cases is the appeal process. The corporate defense side has a long tradition of attorneys who specialize in appeals. But there are also plaintiff-side appellate attorneys. One of the very best is today’s guest, Deepak Gupta. Deepak and his firm, Gupta Wessler, have one of the highest win rates arguing appeals in the U.S. Supreme Court. He’ll share what the job of an appellate attorney is like day-to-day, how the work can have a big impact, and what it takes to win in today’s Supreme Court.

Walkup’s Spencer Pahlke recently enjoyed spending time at UT Law, hosting office hours and happy hours and connecting with aspiring plaintiffs’ attorneys.

There were plenty of thoughtful questions and great conversations, and it was especially encouraging to meet so many future lawyers interested in pursuing a career on the plaintiffs’ side. Thanks to everyone who stopped by!
