What does it look like when a student turns their love for animals into action? For Niki Anand, it started with feeding stray cats while studying abroad in Greece and grew into something much bigger.

As part of our 20th anniversary Acts of Service series, we're recognizing Niki Anand, former Paragon intern and founder of Purrtective Paws, a legal education platform helping everyday pet owners navigate pet-related legal issues.

From pet prenups and co-parenting templates to tenant rights guides and plain-language breakdowns of animal law cases, Niki is making the legal side of pet ownership less intimidating and more accessible.

One of our favorite details: Niki's next project, Project CLAW, will be a state-by-state database connecting pet owners with local laws and nearby animal services.

Animal welfare isn't just about caring for pets, it's about understanding the laws that protect them too. We're proud to celebrate people like Niki who are closing that gap 🐾

Mae had made the leap. Now she had to figure out how to turn an idea into a company built to last.

In part two of our special 20 Faces of Paragon feature, our Founder, Mae O’Malley, shares what came next.

By 2009, Mae was still running Paragon largely on her own, working from her kitchen counter with two cats by her side, relying on client feedback and a small attorney team to shape the business. That input led to a pivotal shift, from hourly virtual GC services to the minimum weekly guaranteed hours model Paragon still follows today.

Mae reflects on building her first core team around 2010, Gwendolyn, Jen, Tam, and Anna, and the courage it took for attorneys to step off the traditional legal career path to join her. At the time, most of Paragon's attorneys were mothers balancing meaningful legal work with raising children, and Mae believes that willingness to take a less conventional path is what made the model work.

She also shares the phrase that has shaped Paragon for the last 20 years: be human. It's a philosophy woven into every client call, every conversation with attorneys, and every interaction internally, and one Mae hopes will continue to guide Paragon as it grows, because taking care of people is exactly what allows us to deliver excellent service to our clients.

The Law Society Gazette Ireland covered our latest survey on flexible legal careers. Here's what the data shows: 92% of practicing US attorneys say the traditional partner track has lost its appeal, and 87% of legal departments are already using flexible or interim legal talent.

In our latest GC Sidebar episode, Carolyn Herzog, Chief Legal Officer at Elastic, shares the advice from a CEO that completely changed how she thinks about leadership.
