This holiday weekend, our officers focused on one simple goal: saving lives through seat belt safety.

During the Holiday Enforcement Period, CHP officers issued 2,172 seat belt citations to drivers and passengers who chose not to buckle up. While citations are never the goal, every stop was an opportunity to prevent a tragedy.

Seat belts remain one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself and your loved ones on the road. No matter how short the trip is, buckle up every time.

Thank you to everyone who made safety a priority this holiday weekend. Let’s continue working together to keep California roads safe.

Two of California’s largest courts are testing an AI tool that can draft orders and produce research memos.

Judges so far are using it primarily for civil cases, but documents obtained by CalMatters indicate the possibility of expanded applications in criminal cases, where people’s freedom and access to justice are on the line.

The Los Angeles County Superior Court began a pilot program in February to test a tool created by the company Learned Hand. Learned Hand uses a combination of language models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google to act as an AI clerk for judges. In Riverside County, which has a $10,000 agreement with the company to test the program, civil and probate attorneys are primarily using the tool to draft research memos that help judges reach their decisions.

Injuries involving e-bikes and e-motorcycles are the No. 1 reason for Orange County children's visits to emergency rooms, District Attorney Todd Spitzer said as his office continues its crackdown on young riders using the vehicles illegally.

"More than 100 deaths have been attributed to E-Bikes and E-Motorcycles in the United States, and injuries have spiked 430% in just the last four years in Southern California," Spitzer said in a statement Saturday.

A seat belt can be the difference between walking away from a crash and never making it home.

From May 18–31, the California Highway Patrol will participate in the national Click It or Ticket campaign with increased seat belt enforcement. Officers will be stopping drivers and passengers who are not properly buckled up.

Too many lives are lost each year because someone chose not to wear a seat belt. In a crash, being ejected from a vehicle is often deadly, and airbags alone are not enough to protect you.

Buckle up correctly every trip:
✔️ Shoulder belt across your chest
✔️ Lap belt low across your hips
❌ Never behind your back or under your arm
