Governor Newsom signed California SB 574 on September 30, setting first-of-its-kind rules for lawyers and arbitrators using generative AI. The rules take effect January 1, 2027. I’m optimistic about AI in the law. I also think the core idea here is right: the lawyer stays responsible, client information stays protected, and courts get honesty about how filings were made. Tools help. Judgment stays human.

People ask me whether we use AI at the firm. Yes, carefully. It helps us move faster and keep costs down, but client confidentiality comes first, a lawyer checks everything, and the judgment stays human. I'm optimistic about what AI can do for access to legal help, as long as we adopt it deliberately and with people's interests at the center.

After a career serving others, first in the Army and then as a firefighter, our client faced felony assault and battery charges for defending himself in a roadside confrontation. This June, a jury in El Cajon listened carefully and found him not guilty on every count. Grateful to that East County jury, and thrilled for him and his family.

Big year for JTA! 2024 started with a jury trial win in civil court and closed with a jury trial victory in criminal court followed shortly by a huge win at the Fourth District Court of Appeals affirming a six-figure jury verdict from a trial we won in 2022.

Although rare in this profession, we regularly try cases in both criminal and civil court. We take equal pride in freeing our wrongfully accused criminal clients and recovering financial compensation for our civil clients.

Aside from our trial victories, we are beyond proud to celebrate four JTA alumni who passed the California Bar Exam: Laurel Garcia, Samantha Jones, Summer Wright and Joseph Broughton.
