For 15 years, Kennedy Berkley has been proud to call Hays home.

Recently, we had the opportunity to celebrate another chapter in that story with the grand reopening of our newly renovated Hays office alongside the The Chamber in Hays, Kansas, clients, friends and members of the community.

While our address hasn't changed, a lot has over the years. Our team has grown, the needs of the communities we serve have grown, and so has our commitment to making experienced legal counsel accessible throughout western Kansas.

This investment is about more than an updated office. It's about continuing to invest in the people and communities that have placed their trust in Kennedy Berkley for the past 15 years.

Thank you, Hays, for celebrating with us and for continuing to be such an important part of the Kennedy Berkley story.

Access to experienced legal counsel matters, no matter your zip code.

Managing Partner James Ryan Angell recently sat down with the Salina Post to talk about the growing shortage of attorneys in rural Kansas, why this issue matters for the future of our communities, and the opportunities that exist for the next generation of attorneys willing to build their careers here.

At Kennedy Berkley, serving rural Kansas isn't new to us. It's been part of who we are for decades, and we're proud to continue investing in the people, offices and communities that allow us to do that work.

Thank you to the Salina Post and Nicolas Fierro for helping bring attention to an important conversation for rural Kansas.

As summer comes to an end and school begins we want to give well wishes to our former legal assistant, Courtney, as she begins her first year of law school! Courtney has been an exceptional part of the Kennedy Berkley team for the past year with her dedication to her work, humor around the office, and willingness to help wherever needed.

It is so rewarding to support our talented team as they continue to grow and pursue their goals. We are so proud of Courtney as she begins her legal education at Tulsa Law School and cannot wait to continue cheering her on along the way.

Congratulations, Courtney!

Understanding agriculture means understanding the business behind the operation, too.

Kennedy Berkley has represented banks since our firm was founded in 1961. That experience, paired with firsthand service on a bank board, gives our attorneys a unique perspective on agricultural lending, financing, and the banking needs of today’s producers.

When we represent Kansas farms and farming operations, that perspective matters.

Experience on both sides of the table helps us see the bigger picture.

Let me say the quiet part out loud: no parent wants to bring up a prenuptial agreement with their son or daughter. It feels like you're questioning their judgment, or doubting the person they love. So most of us say nothing and hope it all works out.

I understand that completely. I've got kids of my own.

But here's what I see from the business and succession side of my practice:

What you and your family have built, the business, the company, the land, the savings of a lifetime doesn't just belong to you. It's headed to your kids, and to theirs. And the day your son or daughter marries, a piece of everything your family worked for becomes tied to a marriage you don't control.

A prenuptial agreement isn't about distrusting the person your child is marrying. It's about making sure that if life ever takes an unexpected turn, what your whole family built stays in the family for your kids, and for theirs.

Because without that conversation, a single divorce a generation from now can:

→ Force the sale of a business the family spent decades building. → Pull siblings and co-owners into a fight that was never theirs. → Undo, in one settlement, what your family spent a lifetime creating.

So here's my plea to the parents and grandparents reading this: have the conversation. Not as a demand, as a gift. Frame it as protecting the whole family, not policing a marriage. And if your family business or operating agreement already calls for it, even better, then it isn't personal, it's simply how your family looks after what it built.

It's an awkward talk. It may also be the most important one you ever have with your kids about what you're leaving them. (Our family-law and succession teams help families through exactly this. Gently, and with respect for everyone at the table.)

Hard to bring up? Without question. Worth it to protect what your family spent generations building? Every single time.

— James Ryan Angell, Kennedy Berkley
