Suspected drug lab, 11 fi****ms, $22K seized from St. Augustine home in undercover investigation: SJCSO

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office says an investigation led detectives to a St. Augustine home where they uncovered what authorities believe was an operating drug lab — seizing fi****ms, suspected narcotics and thousands of dollars in cash.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office has arrested and charged Jake Matthew (34) with multiple felony offenses, including: Aggravated Animal Cruelty, Possession of a Fi***rm by a Convicted Felon, False Report to Law Enforcement, Unlawful Disposal of a Dead Animal, and Using an Animal to Fight or Bait.

On August 25, 2026, deputies responded to the 3000 block of Ninth Street in Elkton after receiving multiple calls reporting gunshots near Matthew's home. Deputies did not locate anything suspicious at the time. The next day, deputies returned to the area after the remains of a decapitated adult female dog were discovered at a vacant lot on Tenth Street.

SJSO Property Crimes Detectives executed a search warrant at Matthew's home, locating additional mutilated dog remains, a gun cleaning kit with gun oil, a box used to store pistols, several other items and accessories. No fi***rm was recovered. Matthew is a convicted felon and is not allowed to possess any fi****ms.

On September 2, 2026, detectives executed a second search warrant, locating several 9MM shell casings in the backyard near the area where the dog's remains had been found, along with a fired bullet from a tree truck. Detectives also located two dead cats on the property and seized two adult male dogs, eight puppies, and two piglets.

A necropsy conducted by the UF College of Veterinary Medicine determined the dog, identified as Matthew's adult female dog, 'Daisy', was shot several times at close range.

Based on the investigation, detectives believe Matthew killed Daisy in the backyard using a 9MM handgun.

Matthew was arrested on September 17, 2026, and is currently in custody at the St. Johns County Jail on $45,750 bond.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office is aware of the conversations about License Plate Reader [LPR] technology. We hear the concerns from the community and would like to clarify how the technology is utilized in St. Johns County.

SJSO introduced license plate reader technology in 2017 and currently operates 180 cameras countywide.

SJSO utilizes LPRs as an investigative tool to assist with locating wanted and missing individuals, recover stolen vehicles, and investigate violent crimes. When a vehicle of interest is identified, the license plate number is flagged in the database, and law enforcement is immediately notified if the vehicle is located. LPRs only capture a vehicle and its license plate and does not capture a driver’s identity or continuously track where someone travels.

License plate readers are a valuable tool for public safety efforts in St. Johns County, and since 2017, have assisted with:
• Locating 600+ stolen vehicles & 300 stolen tags
• Recovering 164 items of stolen property
• Locating 247 wanted individuals
• Locating 180 missing individuals
• Charging 831 individuals responsible for crimes

SJSO has strict oversight and auditing procedures to prevent the misuse of license plate reader technology. To date, SJSO has not identified any instances of intentional misuse of the system by
our personnel.

A domestic violence investigation into a St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office sergeant has expanded, resulting in drug-related charges against two SJSO employees.

Custom homebuilder Spencer Calvert was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison for an organized fraud scheme in St. Johns County bilking property owners of millions of dollars. One of his victims was Bravo TV's Capt. Sandy Yawn of "Below Deck."
