The holidays can bring up big feelings after a divorce, for you and your kids. A clear plan can make the season feel a lot more merry and a lot less stressful.

A good holiday schedule in your parenting plan spells out:
🎄 Which holidays each parent gets, such as alternating years or splitting the day
🎄 Exact pickup and drop-off times
🎄 How travel and extended family visits will work

When everyone knows the plan ahead of time, there's less room for conflict, and your kids get to focus on making memories.

In a traditional court case, much of the timeline is set by the court's calendar, with hearing dates, deadlines, and waiting for your turn. Collaborative divorce works differently.

Because the process happens outside the courtroom, meetings are scheduled around your family's needs. That means you can:
🕰️ Take time to gather information and understand your options
🕰️ Slow down when emotions are running high
🕰️ Move efficiently when you're ready to make decisions

One thing stays the same: California's six-month minimum waiting period still applies before a divorce can be final. But how you spend that time, and how you reach your agreement, is up to you and your team.

Coparenting runs more smoothly when both parents are working from the same information. Keeping your coparent in the loop helps them stay involved and shows your kids that their parents are still a team when it comes to them.

Information worth sharing promptly:
📅 School events, conferences, and report cards
🩺 Doctor and dentist appointments, illnesses, and medications
⚽ Practice schedules, games, and recitals
🎒 Changes in your child's mood, friendships, or needs

A shared calendar or coparenting app can make this easy, so updates don't depend on memory or last-minute texts.

Does getting divorced in California mean everything you own will automatically be split 50/50?

California is a community property state, but determining what is community property, what is separate property, and how assets and debts should be divided isn’t always straightforward.

If you’re considering divorce and have questions about what may happen to your property, finances, or other assets, get advice specific to your situation. Contact Bartholomew & Wasznicky LLP to schedule a consultation with an experienced Sacramento family law attorney.

When you’re going through a divorce, social media can feel like a place to vent, explain your side, or respond to your spouse. But what you post online can become part of your case—and deleting it later may not make it disappear.

Comments, photos, screenshots, messages, and even seemingly harmless posts can be taken out of context or used to challenge your credibility. Before you post about your divorce, your spouse, your children, finances, dating life, or the court process, consider how it might look if it were shown to a judge.

When in doubt, keep your off .

Telling your children that you’re getting divorced can be one of the most difficult conversations a parent has to face.

How you approach that conversation can help set the tone for how your children adjust to the changes ahead.

If you’re considering divorce and have questions about custody, parenting, or what comes next, speak with an experienced Sacramento family law attorney. Contact Bartholomew & Wasznicky LLP to schedule a consultation.

"If we agree on everything, our divorce can be final in a few weeks." Unfortunately, that's a myth.

In California, a divorce can't be final until at least 6 months after the other spouse is served with divorce papers (or first appears in the case, if that happens sooner). This waiting period applies even when both spouses agree on everything.

The good news is that the waiting period doesn't have to be wasted time. During those 6 months, you can:
📋 Work out your agreement on property, support, and custody
📋 Finalize your paperwork so the judgment is ready
📋 Plan for your next chapter

If you reach a full agreement early, the court can approve it before the 6 months are up. Your marriage just won't officially end, and you can't remarry, until the waiting period has passed.

Recording a conversation may seem like a way to document what was said, but California has laws restricting the recording of confidential communications without the consent of everyone involved. Before hitting record during a divorce or custody dispute, understand the potential legal consequences.
