These students are learning how to repair cars - and what skilled hands can do for another family.

At Louisa County High School in Mineral, Virginia, automotive-technology students spend months inspecting and refurbishing donated vehicles. Through a partnership with the nonprofit Giving Words, the finished cars are presented free to single mothers experiencing transportation difficulties.

Approximately 20 students may contribute to each vehicle. Their work can include brakes, tires, batteries, fluids and heating or cooling systems. Before a mother receives the keys, the car is sent to a professional shop for a safety inspection.

The partnership had been operating for eight years as of January 2026, with students working on about five giveaway cars annually. Giving Words has distributed more than 60 vehicles overall, and students have worked on approximately half of them. Other cars were refurbished through the nonprofit’s network of repair shops.

One recipient, Jessica Rader, received a refurbished 2007 Prius in 2023. She later said dependable transportation helped her move from part-time to full-time employment and begin school while raising her children.

The students leave with mechanical experience. A mother leaves with a safer way to reach work, school, appointments and everything her family depends on.
