Woods Rogers

Woods Rogers Woods Rogers is a Virginia-based law firm delivering uncommon service and solutions.

Woods Rogers Vandeventer Black is the combination of Woods Rogers, founded in Roanoke in 1893, and Vandeventer Black, established in Norfolk in 1883. The new firm is based on the principles of mutual respect, community leadership, and unwavering dedication to client service. The combined firm of more than 130 attorneys provides a robust offering of enhanced legal expertise for Virginia businesses,

including the growing technology and manufacturing corridors. Other vital areas of service include corporate and transactions, finance, commercial real estate, litigation, construction, transportation, energy, labor and employment, government contracts, cybersecurity, intellectual property, and more. Through counsel and strategic solutions, we support the legal requirements of major corporations, small and mid-sized businesses, entrepreneurs, start-up ventures, and individuals. From our office offices in the key markets of Roanoke, Norfolk, Richmond, Lynchburg, and Charlottesville, with additional locations in Kitty Hawk, NC, and Hamburg, Germany, we are well-positioned to serve local, Mid-Atlantic, national, and international clients with superior services tailored to businesses. We often serve as local counsel for a large roster of out-of-state firms whose clients need representation in the commonwealth and the Eastern and Western District Courts of Virginia. Our attorneys are leaders in professional organizations and associations who serve as members on boards of banks, hospitals, colleges, museums, professional associations, industry associations, and community organizations.

The Virginia Maritime Association’s 2025 Annual Business Meeting was a wonderful way to close out the year, bringing together colleagues and friends to reflect on the progress and collaboration across the industry. Among the highlights, we were proud to see Mark Coberly, principal at Woods Rogers, recognized with an Honorary Lifetime Membership. This distinction celebrates his long-standing service, steady leadership, and deep commitment to advancing VMA’s mission and Virginia’s maritime community.

Additionally, we are pleased to share that Woods Rogers Maritime Practice Chair Richard Ottinger has joined the VMA’s Board and been appointed General Counsel, succeeding Mark in that capacity.

Congratulations, Mark, on this well-deserved honor and, Richard, on the new role!

Woods Rogers joins the country in recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day. We take this day to acknowledge and honor the rich cultures and histories of Indigenous communities across the globe. This day serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of Indigenous peoples, particularly here in our nation.

As we reflect on the impact of colonization, it is important to recognize the ongoing struggles faced by Indigenous communities and to amplify their voices. It is also important to recognize the many invaluable contributions of Indigenous communities to our world rather than reducing this day to only a narrative of oppression. Let us commit to learning about Indigenous histories, supporting Indigenous rights, and advocating for Indigenous futures while celebrating the beauty of their heritages.

Together, we can foster understanding, respect, and healing. Today and every day, we honor Indigenous peoples. We welcome everyone to learn more about Indigenous Peoples’ Day here: https://s.si.edu/46PuD3Z
