"A 5-year-old girl is back in Turkey with her mother after an international custody dispute was settled earlier this month in a Lynchburg federal court."

A quick update on a case we shared earlier this month: the little girl at the center of it is home in Turkey, back with her mother.

We took this one on a referral from the State Department, and it grew into something bigger than any of us expected once we understood the full picture. A wrongful international removal, a Hague Convention petition, an eight-hour hearing, and a result that came quickly and correctly.

But a court ruling is a beginning, not an ending. As Devon put it, the mom is delighted to have her daughter back, but this isn't healed the moment the child steps off the plane. Rebuilding a secure bond between a mother and a child who've been apart takes time.

The remaining steps now belong to the Turkish courts. Our part was making sure the Convention did what it was designed to do, and it did.

Helping people tackle hard things.

This week our team stood in a Lynchburg federal courtroom for nearly eight hours on behalf of a mother seeking the return of her 5-year-old daughter under the Hague Convention.

The Hague Convention exists for one reason: when a child is wrongfully taken across an international border, the country the child was taken to isn't supposed to relitigate custody. It's supposed to send the child back so the proper courts can decide.

On Monday, the judge ordered the child returned to Turkey and recognized the mother's right to immediate custody. What happens next isn't for an American court to decide. That's for the Turkish courts.

"We're really glad that the Hague Convention worked the way it was supposed to today," said Devon Slovensky.

International custody cases are some of the hardest we handle. We're grateful for the outcome and for the trust our client placed in us.

Case results very based on individual case facts.

If your life has changed, your documents probably haven't caught up.

After a divorce, your old will still says what it says. Your medical directive still names who it names. That doesn't change automatically, you have to change it.

This summer, we're running a clinic specifically for people who are ready to make sure their paperwork reflects their actual life. A will, a power of attorney, and a medical directive, updated, legally sound, and yours again.

Spots are limited. There's a small participation fee confirmed at booking.

You don't think about it because you don't want to. Most parents don't.

But the people who depend on you need you to have a few things in place. A will that says where your assets go. A power of attorney so someone can act for you if you can't. A medical directive so your wishes are followed if it ever comes to that.

These are the documents that protect the life you've built around your kids, so they aren't navigating questions you should have answered.

This summer, Slovensky Law is hosting a Community Estate Planning Clinic. Three appointments. Three documents. Done.

You've spent your whole life building something. Your home. Your vehicles. Whatever you've put away.

Without a will, the state decides where it goes. Without a power of attorney, your family can't touch your accounts when you need them to. Without a medical directive, someone else is making calls about your care.

This summer, Slovensky Law is hosting an Estate Planning Clinic for Roanoke-area residents who are ready to get it sorted. All three documents, handled right. This isn't free, and it isn't a $2,000 legal bill either. Designed to be accessible.

There are people in our community who need a power of attorney and a medical directive right now, and shouldn't have to choose between getting them done and paying their bills.
These aren't optional documents. They determine who makes decisions for you if you can't make them yourself. They take the burden off your kids. They make sure your wishes are actually honored.

This summer, we're running an Estate Planning Clinic for Roanoke-area residents who are ready to get this done. All three documents. This isn't free, and it isn't a $2,000 legal bill either. Designed to be accessible.

We are incredibly proud to announce that Attorney Emily Sitzler has submitted her name as a candidate for the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court judgeship in Bedford County.

While we strive to keep the best talent on our team for as long as possible, seeing our attorneys considered for the bench is the ultimate testament to the caliber of counsel we provide our clients. A firm’s strength is measured by the quality of its people, and Emily exemplifies the dedication and expertise that the Virginia legal community deserves.

If you are a member of the Bedford Bar, we hope you will join us in supporting Emily. We are cheering for her!
