I was recently inducted into the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin 🍷 The name translates to the brotherhood of knights united by the tastevin, the symbol of wine tasting and Burgundy wine tradition.

The story behind this organization is actually incredible. In 1934, Burgundy was in economic crisis. Cellars were full but nobody was buying wine. Instead of giving up, two men decided to revive the ancient wine-loving brotherhoods of 1600s and 1700s Europe. Wine clubs centered around wine, food, celebration, and camaraderie.

The Confrérie was officially born in 1934 and they acquired the Château du Clos de Vougeot as their headquarters. An ancient castle (former monastery) in the heart of Burgundy’s vineyards. Today there are 12,000 Chevaliers from 75 chapters around the world.

The San Diego chapter has been active for 44 years. Getting in isn’t easy. You need to be recommended by a member and pass a test that evaluates your knowledge and appreciation of Burgundy wine. At my induction ceremony, I was surrounded by people who are as passionate about Burgundy wine as I am. What struck me most were the conversations and friendships forming between members, built on shared knowledge and genuine love for this world. These are connections I hope will last for years to come.

Later this year, 30 of us will be heading to the château in Burgundy. I can’t wait.
