One of the things I hear most often from practice owners is some version of, “Well, this is how everyone else does it.”

I get it! When you’re building a practice, it’s natural to look around and see what other people are doing.

But their practice isn’t YOURS. Their risk isn’t yours. Their relationships aren’t yours. Their plans aren’t yours.

And sometimes, what everyone else is doing isn’t something you should be doing in the first place. 😉

There are a lot of things you can figure out as you go in business. The things that protect what you’re building probably shouldn’t be one of them.

…but this isn’t a real photo.

That got me thinking about AI.

The biggest risk with AI isn’t that it’s obviously wrong.

It’s that it’s convincing.

I see it with contracts all the time.

They look complete.
They sound legal.
They even read professional.

Until a lawyer reviews them.

AI can give you a draft.

It can’t tell you what your business actually needs.

That’s still the job of judgment. And a professional 😉

Things I find kinda chic about the practice owners I work with, in no particular order.

None of it looks impressive from the outside. It’s paperwork, roles, pricing, the stuff nobody posts about. It’s also the difference between a practice that runs and a practice that runs you.

Most practice owners call a lawyer when something is already wrong. Mine call me so nothing does.

Another successful REGISTERED® trademark.

Getting to that ®️ is almost always a team effort.

My clients built a brand worth protecting. They put in the work, used the mark consistently, and provided the evidence we needed along the way.

My job was to navigate the legal process, anticipate the issues that came up, and help move the application across the finish line.

Trademark registration is never guaranteed. Every application is different, and there are plenty of reasons one can be refused.

You went into this to take care of people. The business side came later, and it came fast. Suddenly you’re the employer, the one signing the contracts, the person every problem rolls back to.

Here’s what I tell the practice owners I work with. The instinct that makes you good with patients, catching the small thing before it becomes the big thing, is exactly what the business behind your practice needs.

Most of the messes I get pulled into were quiet and fixable months before anyone called. A contractor agreement that didn’t match how the person actually worked. An operating agreement nobody touched after a new partner came on. A payer contract signed fast under a deadline.

Prevention isn’t only good medicine. It’s how you protect what you built.

If the back end of your practice has been sitting on your someday list, it’s time to move it up.
