Being asked to give a deposition can feel intimidating, especially the first time. Here's what it usually looks like:

• It's sworn testimony, but it typically happens in a conference room, not a courtroom
• A court reporter records what's said, and some depositions are also videotaped
• The other side's attorney asks most of the questions, and your own attorney is there with you

A few habits that help: listen to the entire question, pause before you answer, answer only what's asked, and remember it's perfectly fine to say "I don't know" or "I don't remember" when that's the truth.

Most important, prepare with your attorney beforehand. Every case is different, and your attorney can walk you through what to expect in yours.

It's Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 4–10), and this year's national campaign from the National Fire Protection Association is focused on safe charging. Phones, laptops, e-bikes and power tools all run on lithium-ion batteries, and those batteries are safest when they're charged the right way.

A few habits worth building at home and at the office:
• Use the charger and cord made for your device
• Charge on a hard, flat surface, not a bed, couch or pillow
• Unplug once the battery is full
• Watch for heat, swelling, smoke or unusual odors

Fire and explosion cases are a significant part of our litigation practice, so we see how quickly an everyday ignition source can turn into a serious loss. Take a minute this week to check the chargers around you.

Meet Cade Burghart.

Cade first joined Sanders Warren & Russell as a law clerk in 2024 and stepped into an associate role after earning his law degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law in 2025. Today his practice focuses on construction, employment and personal injury litigation.

Before law school, Cade earned a Bachelor of Science in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology from the University of Kansas, and at UMKC he served on the UMKC Law Review. Outside the office, you'll find him cheering on the Royals, Chiefs and Jayhawks.
