Tamela and I are having an incredible, high-energy week out here at the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys Fall Summit on Coronado Island!
We just wrapped up a masterclass session with Robert "Bob" Keebler on the IRS Final Regulations for SECURE Acts 1.0 and 2.0.
For our high-net-worth tax planning clients, the stakes on this could not be higher. The IRS recently finalized these rules, and they completely rewrite the script on how large IRAs and retirement accounts transfer to the next generation.
If you aren't careful, your beneficiaries could face a massive tax trap, forcing them to pull money out—and pay heavy income taxes—much faster than originally planned.
My two biggest takeaways from discussing the changes with Bob:
1. The Spouse Trap: How a surviving spouse handles their initial distribution completely changes the tax timeline and liability for your kids and grandkids later.
2. Older Trusts Must Be Updated: If you have a trust that was built for retirement assets a few years ago, the new 10-year rule might accidentally trigger a huge, unnecessary tax bill. These need to be audited and updated immediately.
Sophisticated wealth protection is no longer just about choosing the right investments—it's an ongoing chess match against shifting IRS regulations.
It was great catching up with Bob after the presentation to compare notes. Tamela and I are excited to bring these cutting-edge strategies back home to keep our clients' family legacies tightly protected. 🌴📈
