Good points in Derek’s article about Beneficiary Designations that are often referred to as POD or TOD accounts that pay on death(POD) or transfer on death(TOD) to a beneficiary named on the POD or TOD account. Also they are sometimes referred to as “Poor man’s trusts” because like a living trust, the asset with a beneficiary designation does not have to go thru probate to transfer to a named beneficiary and costs less to set up than a living trust. However a POD and or a TOD can backfire if not done right or if transfer on death is to a person who should not receive the property outright without “strings attached” that can only be set forth in a living trust.

Black and white 1941 picture shows small sign on left for my Uncle John Moore’s law office. John was oldest practicing lawyer in Winnebago County and a beloved country lawyer who loved his Arabian horses on his hobby farm and did not want his farmer clients to know he graduated from Harvard Law School. Two of his brothers married two sisters and were also lawyers one who sang in my dad’s orchestra(“the romantic voice of Jim Moore”).
His father-in-law was my grandfather Charles Williams who also had a law office up Main Street to north on second floor south of the side walk clock(that was in front of current Ruby Owl) with his brother George Williams who started the law firm in 1895 that became Williams and Williams in 1903.
John later moved his law office to second floor on SW corner of Main and Algoma and it burned in the 2000 (?) Hunan Chinese Restaurant fire. I called him after the fire and said I had room for him at my law office and he said “I think I am going to hang it up” then he called me a couple days later and moved into my office where he practiced another 3-4 years. My aunt Martha his wife wrote the poem of the night of the fire (“Country Lawyers Customary Cool”. John More was also a WW2 Navy vet, city attorney, district attorney, state assemblyman who had a son, John A. Moore Jr. and two grandsons who became lawyers.
The next photos from across street shows west side of Main St and 1953 fire that was on second floor above the law office of Williams & Williams between Britts Bootery and Arthur Murray Dance Studio. My grandfather may be on sidewalk in front of Britts next to large man pointing up in one of those fir photos.

My 1st cousin (and mentor) from Oshkosh the late John Adams Moore Jr ., whose dad,John Adams Moore Sr. (married to my Aunt Martha) practiced law in Oshkosh till he was 87. John Jr. decided not to practice law with his dad and moved to the wild west, Yakima, WA.,where he became a criminal defense lawyer (going by name Adam Moore since there was another John Moore out there). He tried over 40 murder jury trials with some broadcast on Court TV. He retired at 72 and sadly passed at 76 on 2/10/2020 and his funeral had to cancelled due to start of Covid.
