Friday Case File 🔎 What’s your answer — A, B, C or D?

Answer before reading below.

Answer: D — Only that the obituary identifies her as a daughter.

Obituaries can be incredibly valuable during an investigation, especially when researching family relationships and potential heirs. But an obituary is still only one source of information.

The word “daughter” alone does not tell us whether that person is a biological child, legally adopted child, stepchild, foster child, or someone the decedent raised and considered family. It also does not, by itself, establish that person’s legal right to inherit.

That distinction matters.

In heir research, taking a relationship at face value can change an entire family tree and potentially lead an investigation in the wrong direction. Information has to be compared with other available records and evidence before a relationship can be properly documented.

Finding a name is one thing. Establishing how that person actually fits into the picture is another.

That’s where thorough investigative research matters.

Private investigation looks a little different than most people imagine.

Surveillance and field work can absolutely be part of an investigation, but much of the work happens long before anyone ever picks up a camera.

A strong investigation often means sorting through public records, identifying and verifying individuals, tracing family and professional connections, reviewing court and property records, researching assets, analyzing social media and other online information, making calls, and comparing information across multiple sources.

And finding information is only part of the job.

The real value is knowing which information matters, how the pieces connect, and when something doesn’t add up.

A name appearing in a database doesn’t automatically make it the right person. An address doesn’t necessarily mean someone still lives there. An obituary, social media profile, public record, or online search result can provide an important lead, but each source is only one piece of a much larger picture.

That’s why our work goes beyond simply running a search. We research, cross-reference, verify, and document our findings so our clients have information they can actually use.

For attorneys, law firms, businesses, and other professionals, sometimes the difference is in what you find.

Other times, it’s in what you know to question.

Sometimes multiple sources appear to tell the same story, until one additional piece of information changes the entire picture.

An obituary may describe someone as a child. Social media may reinforce that relationship. Other records may appear consistent. But family structures can be more complicated than they first appear, especially when foster relationships, informal caregiving, adoption, remarriage, or other circumstances are involved.

That’s why investigative research cannot stop at the first seemingly consistent set of results. Information has to be compared, questioned, and verified before conclusions are made.

In heir and family research, the difference between an assumption and a verified relationship can matter.

MYTH: The obituary tells the whole story.

FACT: An obituary is often a helpful starting point, but it isn’t designed to establish a complete legal family tree.

When heirship matters, relying on a single source can leave important questions unanswered. Family structures can include prior marriages, remarriages, name changes, adoptions, estranged relatives, predeceased heirs with descendants, or family members who were simply omitted. In many cases, additional records must be reviewed and compared before family relationships can be confidently verified.

That’s why professional heir searches involve much more than a simple online search or a single document. The process requires gathering information from multiple reliable sources, verifying relationships, resolving discrepancies, and documenting the research performed.

At Sleuth Search Partners, our reports are designed to provide attorneys, title companies, fiduciaries, and other legal professionals with clear, well-documented research that supports due diligence and helps move matters forward with confidence.
