Many people expect a concussion to clear up quickly. For a lot of people, the headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and trouble concentrating keep going much longer. In a Curtin University study, almost half of participants still reported symptoms a year after their injury.

The study looks at the risk factors behind those prolonged symptoms, and it's useful reading for anyone recovering from a head injury or caring for someone who is.

One thing worth knowing from the legal side: in California, a person's health history doesn't let the at-fault driver off the hook. If someone was more vulnerable to a lasting injury, the responsible party still answers for the harm that was caused.

The other thing is paperwork. The medical record carries the weight. Tell every provider about every symptom, keep your follow-up appointments, and don't let weeks go by without being seen.

Chrysler has issued a recall for about 265,000 Ram vehicles because of a steering risk. It covers certain 2022 to 2026 Ram ProMaster 1500, 2500 and 3500 vehicles and 2024 to 2026 Ram 3500 Electric vehicles. If you drive one, it is worth a minute of your time.

The law gives you this: when a manufacturer files a safety recall, it has to fix the problem at no charge to you. You can look up your vehicle by VIN at NHTSA.gov and see right away whether anything is open. Plenty of recall letters get lost in the mail or tossed with the junk, so checking yourself is the safest way to know.

It is also worth knowing that California holds manufacturers responsible for defective products. If a defect causes a crash, the injured person does not have to prove the company was careless. And if a steering problem ever plays a part in a collision, the vehicle itself is key evidence, so it should not be sent off to salvage before it has been looked at.

Share this with anyone in your family who drives one.

Sharing the road with an 18-wheeler is a normal part of driving in California, so the rules on how long truckers can work matter to all of us.

FMCSA is moving toward testing more flexible hours-of-service options. Under current rules, drivers generally have a 14-hour window to drive after 10 hours off duty. Pilot programs like this one are how regulators gather real-world data before deciding whether any permanent change makes sense.

Two things worth knowing. First, a driver following the clock is evidence of care, but it does not automatically answer whether that driver was too tired to be safe. Second, the logging data that shows how long a driver was working does not last forever, so it can be gone sooner than many people assume.

I'll be watching what the pilot data shows.

A 1986 California ballot measure is still shaping civil claims. Courthouse News reports that it limits abuse claims against the Catholic Church.

For general background on shared fault in California: when more than one party is at fault, each defendant generally covers only its own percentage of the non-economic damages. Those are the damages for pain, suffering, and emotional distress.

A lot of people assume that if a defendant is partly to blame, it can be made to pay the whole judgment. For medical bills and lost income, that is still true. For pain and suffering, California changed it. Fault percentages decide the split, and no fixed dollar cap is involved.

It's a rule worth knowing about, because the percentages a jury assigns can change what a case is worth. Understanding it helps people see why lawyers spend so much time on who else was at fault.

2024 to 2026 Range Rover Sport owners: Land Rover has issued a recall because the rear subframes can crack. The subframe anchors suspension and chassis loads at the back of the SUV, so a crack is a real safety concern.

Here is the good news about how recalls work. The manufacturer has to fix the defect for free, and you can look up your own vehicle by entering your VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup. A recall notice in the mail is easy to set aside, but the repair only happens once you book it.

A recall also matters if a defect ever causes a crash. California holds manufacturers strictly liable for injuries caused by defective products, which means the focus is on the defect itself and not on whether the company was careless. And if a part fails in a crash, keep the vehicle as it is until it can be inspected. That part is the evidence.

California has reclassified e-motos as motor vehicles, and it's worth understanding whether one is parked in your garage or just rides past your house every afternoon.

A lot of families buy these thinking they're simply bigger, faster e-bikes. The law now puts them in the motor vehicle category, which brings the heavier set of requirements: an M1 or M2 motorcycle license, registration, and insurance.

It also changes what happens after a collision. When an e-moto rider has no insurance, the absence of registration and coverage can become a central issue in who pays.

For anyone who drives, walks, or bikes near these machines, one practical step is to check your own auto policy for uninsured motorist coverage. It's the part of your policy that can respond when the at-fault person has no liability insurance. Take five minutes and read that line on your declarations page.

Automated speed cameras are coming to more Los Angeles streets. The city plans to switch on a first group in late October, with more to follow, as part of a state law approved in 2024.

A few things worth knowing if you drive in Los Angeles. Each camera starts with a 60-day warning period, when drivers going 11 mph or more over the limit get a written warning only. After that, tickets are civil speeding violations, with fines starting at $50 and rising as speed increases.

The bigger reason for these cameras is how much speed matters in a crash. The faster a car is going, the more force a person's body takes, and that is often the difference between a bruise and a brain injury. Slowing traffic down on busy streets is one of the most direct ways to cut serious injuries.

A camera ticket does not decide who is at fault if a crash does happen. That comes down to the full set of evidence.

E-bikes are everywhere in the Bay Area, and the rules are changing fast. SFist reports that new California e-bike laws let San Mateo County cities and other local jurisdictions ban riders under 12 from Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes as part of a pilot program.

A few things worth knowing if you have kids or ride yourself. California already sorts e-bikes into three classes. Class 3 bikes, which provide pedal assistance up to 28 mph, are off limits to anyone under 16. On top of that, the San Mateo County pilot is optional for each city, so the rule in one city may not match the next one over.

These rules matter beyond tickets. After a crash, whether a rider followed the rules can come up when fault is decided. It is also worth a quick look at your insurance. Your auto policy's uninsured motorist coverage may protect you as a cyclist, and your homeowner's or renter's policy may have gaps for e-bikes.

A five-minute check of your local rules before the next ride is time well spent.

Picture a big rig stopped on the shoulder at night. Normally the driver climbs out and sets reflective triangles behind it, so everyone coming up the road gets an early warning.

Now take the driver out of the truck. That is the question behind a court fight over an FMCSA waiver. It lets driverless trucks use flashing lights mounted on the cab instead of triangles, and Van Hauler has asked the 7th Circuit to halt it.

A waiver is a short-term exemption from specific rules. It does not wipe out a company's broader duty to warn other drivers and use reasonable care, and California has its own DMV rules on whether driverless heavy trucks can run on our roads at all.

We will keep watching how this one plays out, because the answer shapes how roadside safety works when no one is behind the wheel.

E-bikes have become part of how a lot of California kids get to school, so it makes sense that lawmakers are paying attention. Assemblymember Laurie Davies has a bill that requires a student e-bike safety and training program.

Teaching young riders the rules of the road is a good thing. It is worth knowing what it does and does not change in the law, though. Training doesn't decide who is responsible after a crash. That still comes down to negligence, which asks whether someone failed to use reasonable care. California also follows pure comparative fault, which means a rider who is partly to blame can still recover, with the amount reduced by their share of fault.

E-bike class limits are already on the books, and training programs add another layer of what riders are expected to know. Parents, schools, and riders will all be watching how this one rolls out.
